Mi Rancho...Mexican Grill and Bar

Most Texans must have ‘Mexican food’ two or three times a week. Everyone has their favorite restaurant. My family makes the rounds of local restaurants regularly. The choice mostly depends on location, price, and taste. You will find many inexpensive Mexican restaurants in Humble and the surrounding area and there is no shortage of major chains in the area. The trick is to find a restaurant that offers food that is not loaded with fat and oil or lard. Anyone can make greasy food! Some overload the plate with cheese.

If you are watching your carbs you can eat Mexican but you must choose wisely. Leave the tamales or enchiladas alone. Choose beef or chicken fajitas, charro beans rather than refried beans, and red or green salsa. Leave the Mexican rice alone. You can eat the tortilla chips but limit your quantity and keep it under ten or at the most fifteen chips. Use portion control and you can enjoy so called forbidden foods.

The city of Humble is saturated with Tex Mex restaurants but Mi Rancho is a jewel. One of two restaurants located in Humble and Spring. The Humble restaurant is located at 4801 Wilson Road just off Beltway 8. Mi Rancho is decorated with a casual Mexican ranch style, which of course is what Mi Rancho means (My Ranch). Interesting art hangs in the foyer. Their food is served in a laid back atmosphere with Latino music playing in the background. A sports bar is in the back of the restaurant where fans can watch the latest events.

After ten visits during the past year we never have a problem getting a table even on Sunday afternoon when the after church crowd is looking for Sunday dinner. I have heard complaints that the restaurant is noisy on Friday night, but I have never found it to be so.

The food is very good. The red sauce is smooth and chunky at the same time with a touch of cilantro. I love this salsa and recommend it highly. I would dine at Mi Rancho for this salsa. It is that good! On our most recent visit I had fajitas and my guest had the dinner Tampiqueno which is a combination dinner with a cheese enchilada with chili gravy and cheese, a portion of skirt steak, refried beans, Mexican rice, The cold plate comes with guacamole and a puffy queso tortilla chip.

We find the service good and the waiters always keep the tea glasses full. Our favorite waiter Roy was not available but his son, Roy,Jr. took care of us today. He was pleasant, friendly, and always chats with us for a minute before taking our order.

My dinner consisted of beef and chicken fajitas served on a bed of caramelized onions and accompanied by charro beans, shredded cheese, sour cream, and tortillas. do not hesitate to ask for a go box when you leave if you have leftovers. It is almost impossible to eat all the food on your plate. We give this restaurant two thumbs up and then some!

When I was in college, my husband and I were interns on the Texas-Mexican border (Laredo, TX) for the Summer, teaching young Mexican children. We took a trip to San Antonio and fell in love with the Tex-Mex food there. Our favorite thing was to get fresh tortillas at the local corner store in Laredo. They were still warm, and were so fresh. Yum. Thanks for reminding me!
