The football team of the University of Texas at Austin is known as the Texas Longhorns. It gets its name from the Longhorn cattle. This breed of cattle is a symbol of Texas and has played a major role in the state’s development. The Longhorn cattle is now the official “large animal” of the state of Texas.

Longhorns have an illustrious history in college football. They have produced their share of super stars. These include the Heisman Trophy winners Earl Campbell who won it in 1977 and Ricky Williams who won it in 1998. Eleven players have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and four Longhorns have made it to the NFL Hall of Fame too. The Longhorns are second only to University of Michigan in terms of total number of wins. They overtook Notre Dame with eight hundred and thirty one wins in November 2008. The early 1990’s saw a decline in the performance of the Longhorns, but they have staged a comeback in the 2000’s and are back to their winning ways.

The Longhorns play their home games in the Darrell K. Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium. This is a huge stadium with a seating capacity of 94,113. This stadium is also home to the Godzillatron. This is the high definition video display, the first of its kind in a college in the nation. Even though its seating capacity is 94,113, on Thanksgiving Day in 2008, 98,621 people saw the Longhorn beat unranked Texas A&M. This is the highest attendance record for a match.

The Slogan of the University is “Hook ‘Em Horns”. The song “Eyes of Texas” is sung before every game by the players, staff and fans alike. Tony Brackens who plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars is the franchise player of the Longhorns. Selvin Young is known for scoring eight touchdowns in the 2005-06 season. In the 2006 season, Vince Young ran 200 yard against USC and 267 yards against OklahomaState. He crossed the 1000 yard mark for two consecutive years in 2005 and 2006. Greg Davis won the Broyles Award for best assistant coach in 2005-06 after Chizik in 2004-05. Both were Longhorns. Michael Griffin led the Longhorns in tackles in 2005-06 season.
