Thailand: tours on the Burmese border

Mae Sot

Mae Sot is described as a Burmese-Chinese-Karen-Thai trading outpost. Market places within the town sell all sorts of goods including caged birds, live fish and eels.

Rebel soldiers, Burmese spies, mercenaries, UN staff and volunteers mix together in the streets. The town is three kilometres from the Burmese border.

Getting to Mae Sot

Train from Bangkok to Phitsanulok, then bus to Sukhothai. Regular mini-vans from Sukhothai run to Mae Sot via Tak.

Another option is a direct bus from Bangkok to Mae Sot – about 9 hours. However, this is an option that I'd avoid. Long hours on buses in Thailand are not fun and it will mean you miss some great scenery as these bus trips will be during the night.

Mae Sot to UmPhang

Although independent travel via car is possible it is easiest to book a tour in Mae Sot at one of the guest houses.

The village of Umphang is 165 kilometres south of Mae Sot, at the end of the Route 1090, the “Death Highway”. The serpentine road acquired its dubious nickname because some 600 workers died during its construction. Some of them were ambushed by Thai communists, or insurgents from the Karen and Hmong hill-tribe living in the area, who saw the road as a threat to their seclusion. Fortunately the attacks stopped by the mid-Eighties when the Thai government offered amnesties to communist renegades.

Begun in 1968 and finished in 1987, the road, with its 1,219 bends and switchbacks still lives up to its name. And off to the west of the road, the Karen are still fighting the longest-running civil war in history against their Burmese oppressors.

Other information

Umphang

The name Umphang is derived from the Karen word for a small basket used to carry identity documents. Umphang is 670 kilometres northwest of Bangkok.

Route 1090

Almost 600 lives were lost during construction of the Death Highway. In 1972 a major attack killed three policemen and wounded twenty workers. An airstrip was built in Umphang to allow reinforcements to arrive.

Refugee Camps

Mae La camp, 66 kilometres north of Mae Sot, contains as many as 45,000 refugees. In total, more than 100, 000 refugees live in various camps both north and south of Mae Sot.

Nam Tok Thilawsu

Thailand’s largest waterfall is 400m high and up to 500m wide. The falls are at their biggest after the wet session – November and December.

Tours

After a day of rafting, organised tours will establish camp for a night at the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary, close to Thailand’s largest waterfall – Nam Tok Thilawsu. (note spelling will vary)

In 1999, the sanctuary was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and forms one of the largest continuous forests of this type in Southeast Asia.

Most of the tours, lasting three days and two nights, include stopovers at the sanctuary and waterfall, along with elephant riding and off-the-beaten-track outings to rarely visited hill-tribe villages.

I'd suggest a minimum of a three-day tour. It takes the best part of a day to travel to UmPhang and back so this only leaves a day to do some rafting and walking. A four-day tour allows more time to explore this remote region of Thailand.

Tip: During the warmer months remember to take good insect repellents. This area is well known for outbreaks of malaria. I visited in January and the weather was cool and there was a reasonable amount of water for rafting.

I am a tour guide in Myanmar. I have been supporting an extended family thorugh my work as a tour guide. Now life is difficult. How much longer do we have to suffer? China says it is their internal affair and it should be sorted out by its own people. Well, they know it all too well, the regime will not listen and it will just get rid of any one before anything really happens.Everybody knows what happened recently. So I have a question to the Chinese leadership: Do you want us all to fight the generals, get killed and you get another westernmost province with all the resourses at your dispoal?

Thank you for your comment. I, and virtually all my fellow Australians support the people, including the brave monks, of Myanmar in their struggle for a peaceful and respectful government, led by legitimate leaders.

We are aware of your struggle and the world is watching the Burmese military. China has an appalling record on human rights (see Tibet) and should if anything, support the struggles of the people of Myanmar and not its military dictatorship.

I wish you all the best and hope that Aung San Suu Kyi is returned to her rightful position as the people's leader.

You have a nice page here. Gives a lot of background and memories from everything I experienced there. I made a movie about this waterfall, so maybe you like to see. Is Rainman a guide to the waterfall? Would be fun if the guide in my movie could see himself.

To see the movie, you have to click on my name, which is not a very logical thing to do, so here the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tg_ASqWibiM

I hope you like it!
