Send these free vintage Thanksgiving postcards to show you care!

As I went through my collection of vintage postcards to look for Thanksgiving postcards (scroll down to see and download the postcards), I couldn't help but notice how different people in the past must have celebrated the holiday. For our ancestors, setting the Thanksgiving day table might have involved shooting a turkey (gasp!), growing and harvesting pumpkins, corn, wheat and other crops, baking bread and pies, and decorating with items connected to the harvest. They plucked feathers, split open pumpkins, milled wheat and did a number of other tasks most of us wouldn't dream of. You have to wonder where they found the time.

Today, most of us use easy Thanksgiving recipes that take advantage of the availability of frozen turkeys, vegetables and pies, and mass-manufactured bread and stuffing." But does it really matter? In spite of its emphasis on the meal, the essence of Thanksgiving is the togetherness it brings, not the origin of the food. Yes, it would be nice to have everything as pure as we imagine it would have been at early Thanksgiving day celebrations, but as long as we have people to share it with; that's all that matters.

The free vintageThanksgiving postcards to the right make great greeting cards, or they can be used as place cards at your Thanksgiving day table. To make place cards, just download the postcard you like and paste reduced copies of it into a Word document. (If you know how to make tables in Word, it's easy to set up multiple place cards in one document.) Be sure to leave enough room to write each guest's name underneath or on top of the artwork.

Print the place cards on white, ivory or even colored card stock. A paper cutter works best to cut the place cards apart, but you also can use scissors or an X-acto knife. For a more unusual look, fold the place cards first, then cut the three non-fold edges with pinking shears or other scissors that make decorative edges.
