As bad as your current job might be, you should know that a good small business idea could be all you need to break free and become your own boss. I know how depressing it can be to work for someone else who doesn’t value or respect you the way they should, so why not take the plunge and give entrepreneurship a try? I think once you give it a chance you’ll probably wonder why you didn’t cut loose sooner.  Sure, there are other ways to find financial freedom but they involve such long odds that you shouldn't even waste your time.  Yes, lottery players and slot machine droppers, I'm talking to you.  But I digress.

Perhaps you’re ready to make the leap but you think there’s no way that you could come up with a great small business idea. Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s just not true. We all have a great business idea inside of us, we just need to listen and it will come. Try to think about your skills and interests. What are you good at? Why do you enjoy doing in your free time? What activities away from work give you the most satisfaction? Make a list of these kinds of things and I’m sure there will be one or two great ideas somewhere in there. It’s important that you find something that you’ll get at least some enjoyment from, otherwise you might as well stay at the job that you already have and hate.

Once you finally settle on a good business idea then you need to set out a plan before you can quit your job. In fact, in most cases it would probably be a good idea to start your business part time or on the weekends just to make sure it’s going to work before quitting. This not only is the smarter way to go but it also provides the much needed cash flow during the early phases when you might not be doing much business.

I’ve seen many would-be entrepreneurs who had a great idea but they burned out quickly because they had no cash reserved and they quit their job too early. Better to get going in your spare time and then when things really start to rock and roll you can dump your boss and your cruddy job. Trust me, I know how tempting it is to just cut the line and quit your job right away but this is a risky move. Sometimes it will work out and sometimes it will bury you. Then you'll be right back where you started - working that crappy job but this time with a ton of new debt over your head.

Then when things really get moving the fun begins. If you have a good idea and know how to market and keep costs down then you’ll have the joy of watching your weekly revenue and profit just go higher and higher. I’m not saying it will be easy but you will feel more free than ever before, and you might even look forward to going into work every day! It's sort of like a snowball effect. The longer you are in business the bigger the ball gets and the faster it moves down the hill, until it reaches such a thrilling speed that hopefully you'll have more money than you know what to do with.  At this point you can either sell your company for a nice wad of money or you can hang on for the long run and see how far you can take it.
