The History of the ADaDP in the Metropolitan
The Metropolitan Group Accident and Health contracts soon became increasingly popular. By the end of 1941, the company had in force insurance on 2,105 groups, comprising 1,404,782 lives, providing a total weekly benefit of over $20,000,000. The Metropolitan, moreover, had always been well in the lead of other companies operating in the Group Accident and Health field.
In fact, the yearly premium was almost double that of the company transacting the next largest volume of this type of business. The success of the company had been stimulated in no small measure by the special services it offers - by its extensive welfare work, including the Visiting Nurse Service (VNS), and by the cooperation of the Policyholders Service Bureau. This had been accompanied by its progressive lowering of the premium rates for the coverage by virtue of improved claim experience and economies affected in administration.
The minimum basic initial premium rate for the eighth day/thirteen week plan of benefit had decreased from 84 cents a month for a $10 weekly benefit in 1923 to 60 cents. Such reductions had been made not only for new groups, but had also been extended to many existing policies where the experience warranted.
In addition, a total of $33,529,512 had been returned in dividends to the policyholders by the end of 1941. In the years since the inception of this protection to the end of 1941 the Company paid to the insured employees in claims no less than $95,147,530. This form of life insurance has served a basic need though online life insurance quotes were not available among the different types of life insurance.
Side by side with the Group Accident and Health contract, the Company also developed another form of Group Disability insurance. On May 15, 1919, Accidental Dismemberment insurance was introduced, and about three years later was expanded to include Accidental Death benefits as well. Group Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance provided a lump sum payment, but no weekly benefits.
Subject to the provisions of the policy, the full amount of insurance was paid in case of death by accidental means, or in case of the loss (from accidental causes) of both hands, both feet, of a hand and a foot, the sight of both eyes, or of either hand or foot in conjunction with the loss of the sight of an eye. One half the amount of the policy is paid in the event of accidental loss of one hand, one foot, or the sight of one eye. Benefits are usually paid for occupational as well as for non-occupational accidents.
Premium rates varied for different industries, ranging from 10 cents to 35 cents monthly per $1,000 of principal sum for most industries, but sometimes rose to higher prices in the relatively more hazardous enterprises. Paralleling the experience for Group Accident and Health insurance, the cost of Group Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance was progressively lowered.
Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage was occasionally issued in combination with either Group Life or Group Accident and Health policies. Life insurance rates for term life insurance were also available when learning the life insurance basics. When written in conjunction with Group Life, Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance was usually issued for the same amount as the life insurance provided that it did not exceed $5,000 on any employee.
Reductions occurred in March 1941 and resulted in an actual decrease in the total premiums received by the Metropolitan in 1941 despite a substantial increase in the amount of insurance, as compared with the previous year.
Starting with a single group in 1910, this branch expanded until, at the end of 1941, 387 organizations were covered by this type of protection in the Metropolitan; comprising 3,082,096 lives for a sum well in excess of $500,000,000.
