No political affiliations, just took care of the needs of the people.
No political affiliations, just took care of the needs of the people.

What better moment than now to start insisting term limits on our representatives. A few states have placed it on the ballot and in some cases over 60% of voters are in favor of it. Of course, most career politicians and a few big businesses and interest groups will be against it. Big business invests in these career politicians to legislate favorably towards them. If term limits are implemented, the influence will be curtailed. Politicians get comfortable in their roles and morph into what what we are experiencing now, disregarding the will of the people and forcing legislation that is is not good for the people and the country as a whole.

Some say that term limits disrupts continuity and is undemocratic. I would suggest it is the opposite, creating a greater pool of candidates from the full spectrum of political affiliations. Now there would be competition for the best candidate in the Democratic party, Republican party, or any other party that runs. Fresh blood would be injected into the process energizing all political bases. Voters can then feel that we have more choices than just voting for the best of two evils.

I have linked several articles that you can read at your leisure and make up your own minds. For me, the time is ripe to start pushing for it. Some states will be placing it on the ballot, others have implemented it already. It is gaining ground across the country and we need to keep this energy going. It may not be popular with some, it may be extremely popular with others but it is the only way to make sure that our representatives don't get to comfortable in their jobs. They answer to the people and we have to remind them. This is a great way to redecorate our congress and give it a new look as some have become permanent fixtures.

The articles give you excellent points of why some are opposed and others are not. If you are really interested in finding out, I suggest reading them.

Term limits should be a MUST! Why keep the same crazies in office for life, they don't change, if they do it's always for the worse. Great Hub!

No doubt about it, term limits are the way to go. We need a way to rid ourselves of the losers and bring fresh new ideas into a very stale and way too comfortable Congress. Great hub.

I totally agree. I think the only way at implimentation is if "We The People" do our own implimentation. We must never vote for a house member for more than two terms, one term for a senator, as for president they are already limited to two at the most. In many cases one is quite enough.

Term Limits is a disaster at the local level. Candidates have no long-term interests; they understand they will be term-limited out before any of their political chickens come home to roost.

Another huge problem: All too often incumbents quit before the end of their last term simply to get another party apparatchik in office before the next election.

Based on nicomp's comment. The founders intended for citizen legislators to serve the people for a limited amount of time. Then return to their normal life.

I have thought term limits were appropriate for a long time now, but I didn't know any states had already adopted them. We really need to get this on the ballots in all the states becuse congress will never vote for term limits. I also think we should abolish this huge retirement package for serving one term.

Thanks to all for stopping by. Haven't had the time to respond to each individually (still have to work once in a while so I can eat) as I would have liked to.

I served as a consultant in a huge private company and they were having problems in accounts receivables. Their collection reps were assigned accounts to work and collect based on alpha order. These collectors had been years with the company and pretyy much knew their customers well, but still the delinquency of the accounts was growing. I discovered that the collectors were getting to comfortable in their roles with the customer. On a first name bases, phone calls coming in asking for favors, christmas cards with a little something in it, gifts, taking them to lunch, etc., get the picture? They had indepth knowledge of the customer's business and personal life. Normally this is not a totally bad thing but the collectors were not really looking after the company's interest. I decided that we would rotate the collectors frequently so that no one would get comfortable with specfic customers. To management's astonishment, the results started to improve rapidly and the gifts, lunches and other side perks started to diminish. So where am I getting with this? Company =the people, collectors=representatives, customers=lobyist and special interest groups. Customers could nolonger invest in one collector to give them a break when things went bad as they didn't know who the next one would be and how they would react.

This is how term limits works for me. Thanks everyone, great comments.

[hear me chanting] TERM LIMITS! TERM LIMITS! TERM LIMITS! And I'd like to go a step further - pick a date of the next fiscal year and ALL federal spending STOPS - except for the military and the highway system (in the cold Michigan winters, I want my oranges from Florida). Then ITEM BY ITEM - go through and stop for GOOD ALL THE PORK and ONLY continue the federal dollars for THE FEW THINGS THAT ARE IN THE CONSTITUTION WE SHOULD BE TAXED FOR. UG! What has happened to the lawmakers AND THAT DOCUMENT?! HELLO! If it's not constitutional - IT'S GONE! Let the states grapple WITH THEIR OWN problems they need to use taxes for this way I can MOVE if I don't like it! OK - stepping down off my soap box and thanking you for this Hub because YOU'RE RIGHT!

cjv, I can just imagine you standing on the kitchen table screaming your lungs off chanting TERM LIMITS!! I had to chuckle here, sorry. I can't blame you one bit and share your passion and frustration. I think we have all reached a point where we can't take it anymore and feel we are being taken advantage of. No one seems to be listening so it is time they hear us come 2010. We should start flooding our representatives, massively, on the issues we want reform on, and you absolutely know there are plenty.

BTW, I didn't mean to laugh.. ;o)

Government office was never meant to be a career "thing". The whole idea behind our system of government is that representatives have a life, the individual citizens have a life, and that focusing on government and it's antics is only necessary in a small way. Small in that it shouldn't require constant daily monitoring, but big in that it sets the course for our country. Term limits are an absolute must!! Good hub ehern :)

Thumbs up and a "hell, yes!" from me too. I've also written an article about this called We the Sheeple.

I've got two words that support our view on term limits: Robert Byrd.
