The Age of the Entrepreneur

Have you ever heard “go to school, get a good job, work hard and retire”? I think most of us have. Many of us learned this as a way of life while growing up.  The problem is it doesn’t work anymore. There is no such thing as job security. Even if your company is as loyal to you as you are to it, there is no guaranty that it will be in business next year. The paradigm needs to change. This economy we are entering is going to shake things up in a big way. IRAs 401ks and other retirement plans are declining as our economy is headed further into recession and maybe even depression. The “Baby Boomers” are getting ready to retire in the middle of it. Do you think Social Security is going to hold up???   Do you think the stock markets are going to hold up with all of the Baby Boomers pulling their retirement???

I may seem like a nay sayer and a doom and gloomer right now but nothing could be further from the truth. I see immense opportunity in this changing market. Most people think that change is bad but I think it is the best thing that ever happened to us.  This is quickly becoming the Age of the Entrepreneur. Everyone who gets laid off from those large companies that are downsizing, merging or shutting down is going to have to make a choice. Wait until they can find another job or strike off into a business of their own. Many will become practitioners in the same field they just got laid off from. The smart ones will start their own businesses before they even get laid off. The idea of taking your skills and building business for yourself, maybe even getting your current employer as a customer, will allow you to provide the same service to a company without all of the overhead. This helps the company as well as allows you to start helping other companies that need the same kind of help and leverage your time better.

The business owners who are focusing their businesses on taking care of the needs of all of these startups are the ones who are going to make it big through these economic times. When the economy get tough the tough (and smart) make millions and millions.

If you are interested in coming out of this economy better off than you were going in I have some book ideas that will help you get there.

E-Myth by Michael E. Gerber

Rich Dad’s Before You Quit Your Job by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon L. Lechter

The Success Principles  by  Jack Canfield

These are just a few of the great books that can help you. The trick is just pick one up and get started. As you proceed new doors will begin to open for you.

I appreciate the sentiments you've expressed here. It's very true that there are opportunities even in the darkest of situations. The trick is having the ability to spot them.

Thanks for the comments. Amanda, I have found that you need to educate yourself and focus on opportunity everywhere. Every time something "bad" happens I try to force myself to ask what is the opportunity here.
