History
In 1776, a woman named Betsy Ross mended the first American flag. Recently before, she had shown George Washington and some other people how to cut a five-point star with one clip of the scissors. Since then, then American flag has change many times. Today, the American flag has 13 horizontal strips, alternating red and white which represented the original 13 colonies, and a blue rectangle at the top left of the flag holding 50 whites stars, representing 50 states. Some other names for the American flag are Stars and Stripes and Old Glory. You can see the American flag anywhere you go in America; either on a bumper sticker on the back of a car, to home and business windows.
Displays
Even though you can pretty much see the American flag anywhere today in America, there are some places that display the flag only on important days. There are some places where the flag remains continuously; like The White House in Washington D.C. and most importantly, the surface of the moon! There are some places where the flag flys on important days; like July 4, when America claimed its independence, and days such as Labor Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. There are also some instances where the American flag will fly at half-staff, or halfway down the pole. This symbolizes that something very important has happened in our country. For example, after the 9/11 attacks, our nation's flag flew at half-staff.
Different Types of the American Flag in History
The date July 4, 1776 is of great importance for America. This date is when America signed the Declaration of Independence. But would you believe, America had NO flag?! This fortunately has changed. Some flags include the Betsy Ross flag, the 15-Star Spangled Banner flag, 48-Star Spangled Banner flag, and finallym the 50-Star Spangled Banner flag, or American flag. The flag has added more stars 27 times to represent the 50 states of the United States.
Misc
To show respect for the flag, there is a certain way to fold the flag. First, you fold the flag in half. Then you fold the flag again to make a long rectangle shape. After this, you start folding the flag length-wise into triangles until you get to the very end where the flag will be one big triangle.
The American flag is used in military funerals. When someone dies who is in the military, army, etc., a flag is placed over their casket until they are lowered into the ground. The flag is then handed off to one of the person's family members. This is a token of respect for the time that person gave to America in service.

Hi John, Thanks for the great post!
Obviously it wasn't Betsy who made the first flag, but she is still a great historical icon. Here's a great forum with the true history I think you'll enjoy. http://www.usa-flag-site.org/forum/american-flag-h
