I Believe In Angels

I believe in angels. I believe that God has, in His generosity, given a guardian angel to me as a protector, guide and friend who will remain with me until I reach Heaven.

My angel is there with me at all times, while simultaneously being in possession of The Beatific Vision.

Some Christians seem to find the idea of calling on one’s angel unacceptable. Why?

If God gave me an angel, my very own angel to help me and protect me and be a best friend to me, why would I not call on that angel! God’s angels will only act according to God’s will anyway. So, if I call on my angel in any given situation, I am cognisant of the fact that my angel will only respond, according to the will of God.

I have always had a great love for God’s angels, and I have knowingly experienced their intervention in my life on many occasions. I believe it is only when I get to Heaven that I will know the full facts surrounding all that I have been protected from, and guided towards, by these Heavenly creatures, through the grace of God.

Over the past few days, I have been reading some wonderful hubs, written by people who have had significant angel encounters in their lives. If you, like me, enjoy reading about the wonderful ways angels can help us, I would strongly recommend reading these hubs.

However, before you go, allow me to share some of my own experiences with you, please.

Family Prayer

I was brought up in a very gentle Christian/catholic home, and was very fortunate to have two parents who led by example. Prayer was a fundamental part of our daily lives along with charity and hospitality. I was a witness to these right throughout my childhood. My father especially, believed that the greatest gift he could pass on to his six children was faith. This was exemplified by his own quiet prayer life and attention to his religious duties.

My mother, an enormously kind and hospitable woman was frequently known to bring children from very poor circumstances in to our home and bathe, dress and feed them.

Family prayer was an integral part of our daily lives. I have such fond memories of my father holding my hands together as he prayed ‘night prayers ‘with me. My favourite prayer of all was ‘the angel prayer’, a prayer which asks the protection of one’s guardian angel, if it is God’s will.

Ever since, this prayer is a part of my life and the lives of my own children.

My Mother's Angel

A witness To My Mother’s Angel.

August 1997 late at night, I was curled into an armchair, reading a book at the foot of my sick mother’s bed. She had read most of the book, but was too tired to finish it, so she laughingly asked me to finish it and tell her the ending. There was a wonderful peace in the room; a calm quiet peace. My mother was fully compos mentis, and in fact, remained so right up until her death three months later. At one point my nephew, a tall very dark haired young man of seventeen, who was staying the night, entered the room and sat on a low chair just inside the bedroom door.

My mother, whom I thought was sleeping said ‘’Well hello, and who is this lovely young handsome man we have here’’. Lifting my head from the book, I told her it was Colin; I was very surprised she didn’t recognise him!

She responded ‘’Of course I know Colin’’ and laughed and then went on to chat with the beautiful young man whom she said was directly behind me, I saw nothing of course. She praised him for his beauty ,his smile ,his height-her eyes were fixed  towards the top of the wall-she even admired his lovely hair ,skin and freckles; she then said good-bye to him and thanked him so much for coming to see her, assuring him he was welcome anytime.

Conversation over, I asked her was she alright; as pragmatic as ever she told me she’d  be even better if I went and made her a cup of tea!

I feel very privileged to have witnessed, what I have no doubt was, her guardian angel made manifest to her.

My Angel Dentist

My husband had left home very early one Sunday morning to fly to Germany. .My youngest child was then just a few months old, and my two year old son, recently diagnosed with asthma, required a nebuliser at intervals throughout the night.

I was aware of a nagging toothache developing, but it seemed to clear up after some paracetamol .I was so tired when my husband left, I barely remembered saying goodbye to him.

At about six am I woke up sharply with a really intense toothache; it was the worst I had ever experienced, I hopped out of bed and noticed the right side of my mouth very swollen. This time paracetamol had no effect whatsoever. Clearly I had an abscess and needed to be seen by a dentist urgently.

However, this was very problematic on a number of fronts. I was alone with all of the kids; it was a Sunday morning-dentists are not easy to come by on a Sunday in Ireland. I was new in the area and didn’t know anyone sufficiently well enough to call on to babysit. Besides the pain was so bad, I don’t think I would have been a good candidate to drive a car.

I remember feeling a quiet desperation; so I prayed and I prayed; only the Good Lord could have understood what I was saying, the pain made it hard to be very articulate! I sat back in to my bed –my little son asleep beside me-and while holding a cold compress over my cheek, I continued to storm Heaven relentlessly.

I became aware of a great calm in the room and felt my head being settled comfortably on the pillows. I was totally aware of my surroundings and felt fully awake, but very relaxed. A ‘person ‘ dressed in white stood beside the bed and handed me two pills, which I took. I then proceeded to open my mouth, as if in a dentist’s chair and was conscious of this ‘person’ inserting a syringe in to my mouth-I could feel the abscess being drawn out into the syringe. Although my eyes were closed ,I was fully aware of what was happening to me.

I fell fast asleep and woke up some hours later-perfect-not an ache-no swelling-nothing.

What I found most remarkable was the fact that I just accepted what was happening ,without any anxiety or apprehension.

To this day, I have never had an ache in that tooth.

I truly believe my guardian angel was sent to look after me that Sunday morning.

I have some more experiences which I will share with you in another hub soon.Thank you for reading my testimony.

Book of Mark - Chapter 1
13and he remained there for forty days, and was put to the test by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels looked after him.

Thanks for sharing. Many would put your "angel dentist" in the category of a miracle. I've personally come to realize that we have many kinds of helpers from other realms, but I hesitate to label them. We do have much more help here than we know. You might consider as angelic the help that Nancy and I had over the five years it took us to heal her of terminal cancer. That same kind of helper is within me always, answering any questions I have and guiding me in solving challenges in my life. It is angelic? Maybe, but I don't think so. It sure is wonderful, though, and I've come to realize that we all have such a source of wisdom and healing within us. Thanks for your beautiful angelic spirit.

It is wonderfully comforting to think of an angel protecting you through life. It just doesn't come naturally to me, but I'll work on it. Although I generally direct my prayers to the Top, I have absolute faith in St.Anthony. He never lets me down.

I mislaid my bag in school today and spent a good three quarters of an hour looking for it after school. Some of my colleagues, God bless them, stayed behind with me to help in the search. Eventually it was found with a jacket covering it in a room which had been searched by students, teachers and me at least five times. Everybody who helped me were surprised that I wasn't in a complete panic, but I knew St.Anthony would find it for me, and he did.

Would Angels be the souls we once knew in life? If they were any other would we know them?

According to the bible, which I believe, angels are 'pure spirits'created by God-so they are not or have never been human. However, they can, take human form when necessary;there are many accounts of angelic intervention in peoples's lives, where the angels took human form. Each one of us is assigned a guardian angel to care for us spiritually and physically throughout life-a gift from God-a friend who cares for us.

People who have died do not become angels-however,that is not to say that those who have gone to God before us do not look after us in a special way.

AS a Christian and a Catholic,I believe that we should pray for those who have gone before us;we can get enormous help from souls in Heaven and Purgatory-through Jesus ,of course.

From earliest Christian times we call on our angels to help us-angels will only act according to God's will anyway.

While we should pray for souls departed-an early Christian practice-we should never call on souls departed or try to summon them-for their sakes and ours.

ok?

My wife was a Catholic. She was denied a Catholic baptism when she was born two month premature. We are Lutheran, they take anybody. I don't have a tradition about guardian angels. In fact would we recognize them? I am writing a book in which the souls of people come back and share guidances. The thing is the real people here would know the people that died, but not of any spirit or angel. It fact would these spirits do more harm than good.

Oh gosh ,this would take pages to talk about;with regard to your wife's baptism-there is very much a tradition in the Catholic church of early infant baptism. In the case of a premature infant-any baptised person can perform this rite-if there is a risk of death to the child.

I would wonder why the church denied baptism-especially to an infant in such circumstances:there ha to be more to it than that eg., parents must be prepared to raise the child in the faith etc.One possibility is that as a 'sick ' infant ,she may have been baptised by someone at birth ,such as,a nurse-a not uncommon occurence-this baptism stands for life-so the child cannot be re-baptised in a church. The priest may give a blessing-but one is not baptised twice.

The spirits of the dead can certainly be on earth -absolutely-however,it is a dangerous practise to try to contact or to summon people who have died, that is ,to get involved in any situation where they may be called upon eg seance etc-this is the dark side-best avoided.

However,we believe a soul once it leaves the body -can go to one of three places -Heaven ,purgatory -a place of purification before moving on to Heaven, -or they go to

Hell.

It is a holy thing to pray for the souls of deceased people, especially souls in purgatory, whom we call the Holy souls-they pray for us here on earth. They are very close to God.

Spirits do exist on earth of course-if a spirit is 'giving guidance'as you say-is that spirit from God or from Satan-this is where serious harm can be done-the devil has a lot of tricks in his bag.If God wants people to have guidance He will do it His way-pray for it-and listen to Him-ask the protection of your guardian angel-through the will of God .Everything must be done through Jesus Christ in faith.

The whole 'new age' thinking with regard to 'spirit guides' and 'angel guides' is not in keeping with Christianity. There are the good angels-Angels of God-and demons ;demons are the fallen angels-Satans army -so to speak.Spirits can also be from Satan.

Hijinks,

Many books that are now being written -speak of guides-that are not of God.

Christians would view any such 'guides' as being malevolent forces that can truly ruin lives i.e. evil.Sadly evil is alive and well and destructive.

Take care and God Bless

Your traditions are very complicated. I can’t believe that these things should be a puzzle to mortals. My wife was two months premature, a preemie with a 50 per cent chance of living, back in the early 50’s.

I was told this by her mother, who was born in Drumshambo and moved to America (1949?). The priest counted back seven months to the day her parents were married. The child was judged as a bastard and not worthy of baptism.

I have two daughters. My eldest is blessed with a little boy. She says her boy will not go to Hell if he’s not baptized. I say she is right, there is no Hell. One Pastor said that he wouldn’t worship a God who would condemn children.

Well anyway, I weave these ideas into my novels. A retired Lutheran Pastor is reading my works. He says it’s great fun.

I invite you to read my Hub about reading your work. My protagonist doesn’t believe in God, but says a prayer for her friends.

Hi-Jinks

Our traditions are not really that complicated. Also, you are speaking of a time long before I was born-many attitudes have changed-throughout all denominations.

What happeed to your wife is sad-but unfortunately ,yes these things did happen. The people who perpetrated such behaviours will have to answer for that.

God is the final judge-and He is merciful.

Perhaps I may write a hub on this -it will give me more room for expression.

Thank you for your comments-the priest who did that perhaps needs a lot of prayer-God Bless.

'One Pastor said that he wouldn’t worship a God who would condemn children'

God never condemned children-very much the opposite in fact.

This priest who made such a judgement against a young baby was clearly wrong in doing so-no Christian /Catholic would condone such awful behaviour.
