The Argan Tree Wonder
72The Providential Argan Tree
Argan oil comes from this tree, the Argan tree that only grows in SouthWest Morocco. From this tree, local people have always tried to get as many resources as they could.
From wood to cosmetic or culinary oil, to its leaves or the pulp of its fruit, every part of the Argan tree is usable.
Many faceted realities are hidden behind the world's infatuation for its miraculous oil.
First a little botany and history :
In 1911 the official name of Argania Spinosa was given to the tree which is a curiosity of nature. I has grown in Marocco for possibly 80 millions years but has attracted attention only in recent history.
This prickly tree, that has given birth to very sturdy species, and that presents a special nutritional interest around the world cannot be cultivated. It can reach 8 to 10 meters (33') high and live up to 200 years.
Its branches are prickly and have little leaves of a dark green color that can survive even during the dry season.
The Argan tree gives flowers and fruit. It blooms in late May to early June, and its flowers are usually yellow green but sometimes white. The fruit resemble a large olive, it has a pulp and a pit. The pit contains one or more kernels. On average, a tree produces around 8 kilos of fruit per year.
The Imazighen have always used argan oil for its nutritional and cosmetic virtues. Just like a cup of tea, a plate of argan oil and honey is offered to guests as a sign of hospitality at the midst of Berber people. Climatic conditions that can be very harsh in this part of the world (sun, strong winds) cause many skin and hair dryness problems. Argan oil is used to protect and revitalize skin and hair. This amazing oil is also used in traditional medicine, notably for skin conditions. From infants to adults, the life of the Berber people is nourished and surrounded by this oil that is used
- for infants : to rub their body and surround them in comfort and loving feelings
- for children : to help the healing of chicken pox break outs
- for adolescent : to control acne
- for pregnant women : to apply to the skin to prevent stretch marks
- for older people : to massage the sore muscles and articulations caused by aging
Not only does the tree provide all these benefits for this small population, but now with the world demand for this oil a new industry and source of revenue has been created for a people who lived on so little. The tree may even have saved this small population.
