The Real Importance

It just doesn't seem that long ago I went to my son's baseball games at the same baseball field. My son is now 34 years old and I am now visiting the same field to watch my 6 and 7 year old grandsons play. It's amazing how time flies.

I believe you tend to enjoy these events in a different way. I remember my son always wanting to play catcher or pitch. Then the big thing with all the kids was to get one of those rope gums before they played.

I am sitting there and as my son steps up to bat with his cheek sticking out and he was trying to chew but could not close his mouth. It was at that time a little embarrassing while I realized he had stuck all that gum in his mouth. Now to me it is a comical memory and I will never forget.

Now I watch my two grandsons, to totally different personalities which is common in siblings and they were playing ball. One is the bookworm which tries everything anyway, the other is the sportsman who plays sports when not involved in scheduled recreation. One watches the scoreboard and plays with his mitt while the other runs for every ball coming his way. Both always watching to see if you notice what they are doing. If you saw that last play. One hits the ball and makes it to first base. The other hits the ball and is out before he makes it. He leaves frustrated and you feel so bad for him but you cheer them both on. Great game! Great tries! You always let them know how proud you are for they tried.

You always hear how times flies faster as you get older. It's so true. So you try to hang onto every precious moment with those grandchildren because the ones with your own children slipped through so quickly. Soon they will be in their thirties before you realize where it all went.

Today was a special event. It was the baseball game of my grandsons. The score was 12 to 2 but they tried and they had fun. As with many of the other children the game was good because parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, family and friends were there.

Next week we will go fishing. Whoever catches the biggest fish buys the ice cream. Somehow I never catch the biggest but I buy the ice cream. What a joy.
