The Before Life
62Out of the mouths of babes
It's a beautiful sunny morning in London today; cold, bracing and very bright.
Travelling on the train I had to change my position twice. The glare was so powerful, my eyes just couldn't take it, despite my heavy shades. Suddenly, I remembered an interlude with my children going back 17 years. I remember it all so vividly.
My daughter - three-ish at the time - was sitting beside me on the carpet. I had just come out of hospital and was resting on the sofa. My son, who was eight, suddenly looked up from his game and asked: 'Are you afraid of dying, Mum?'
I replied I wasn't and we batted some ideas back and forth. He claimed he 'believed in science not religion' and I argued they need not be mutually exclusive. Then he came out with the question that was really worrying him. Was I going to die because of my illness and would that be the end of me or would I still be somewhere else and okay?
'What happens afterwards?' he asked.
My daughter who was sitting beside me suddenly piped up.'You just stare at God,' she said, as if she was in a trance. 'You know the sun? You know you can't stare into it 'cos your eyes water? Well when you die, you can look straight through and see God.'
I started to get goosebumps. But there was more to come. My son, started to look dreamy, too, now, and said: 'Hey, you still remember, don't you? 'cos I'm starting to forget.'
Something profundly spiritual was going on - I slipped out of the room and left them to their 'before-life' memories.
I wonder what people make of that?

Rapidwriter: Got goosebumps when I read your story. It has been said that children are the closest to God, meaning the closest to being in that enlightened state where they remember where they came from and forget by the time they are around 3. My late nephew Omar, once described when he has about 3 years old of remembering a ship and described it... His mom and dad where not into ships or boats, so my sister (his mom) did research and found said ship, which was a model from the past.
Is interesting, I had not read Writergig's story about the 3 year old girl while writing my comments where I mentioned that 3 seems to be the magical age when children remember their true essence. Pretty good confirmation, because I remember reading this.
And yikes, by mistake, I unsubscribed from your fan club, thinking I was clicking on a hub, but subscribed quickly again! Whew!
Hi VioletSun and Writergig and thanks so much for your comments as well as your stories. It's wonderful to find open-minded people around.
Rapidwriter, that is a beautifyl story. I totally believe what your children said word for word. I had an NDE in my 30s--it was exactly like your daughter described it. It gives me a lot of comfort. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Thanks, pgrundy. It was a very unusual experience.
I make of it as being "normal", as I do believe in that kind of thing. And what happened with your kids sounds lovely. More anecdotes like that if you have them, please. :)
Thanks Isabella. Will do.

That is beautiful, and profound.
I heard from a friend the story of their little girl, who was about three when they were expecting a new baby. The little girl asked if she could spend some time with the baby by herself after the baby was born. The parents thought it a funny little request, but said yes. They were worried about how having a new baby would affect their little girl, and were trying to ease the transition as much as they could.
Sure enough, after the baby was born and was home, the little girl slipped into the baby's room and while her parents listened unnoticed at the door, she went up to the baby in the crib and began to talk.
"Baby, I am your big sister, and we are going to have lots of fun together. I am going to show you everything.
"But please, can you tell me what God looks like? I'm starting to forget."
