The Benefits of being a Vegan:

There is an abundance of information out there about the Vegan way of life but the question remains what are the benefits of choosing to follow what might at first appear as a daunting commitment. Veganism, simply put is taking the vegetarian diet a step further. Vegans do not consume any animal or animal by-products whatsoever, neither do vegans use or wear goods that contain animal ingredients or have been tested on animals. With other words the vegan life-style is a life altering way. It excludes all meat products, dairy products such as cheese and butter, eggs and honey. Clothing made of leather, wool and silk are not acceptable either and need to be avoided.

How do vegans thrive? How do they survive without animal protein? What about nutrients and a well balanced diet? So in short what are the benefits of Veganism?


The benefits are endless and on many levels. Where to begin? A vegan’s well set-up diet is possibly the most balanced diets available and is so very good for the soul and body.

Good for the body:

·          Knowing that the vegan diet is credited to lowering the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, allergies, diabetes, colon and prostate cancers, it lowers cholesterol and obesity-related illnesses and more.

·          The vegan diet is a choice that will deliver boundless energy.

·          Eliminating the consumption of animal products and replacing them with healthy vegan foods of vegetables, legumes, fruit, whole grains and nuts which contain no cholesterol, are low in fat and are rich in nutrients and fiber will cleanse the body and rejuvenate it all the way down to the core.  


The above points are just some of the benefits concerning the peace of the soul; however the following items listed as ‘good for the body’ will actually transfer and maybe should not be separate. But knowing that the vegan way is a choice that lets one thrive with less disease does give the subconscious mind peace and therefore is also good for the soul.

There are very few choices that we can make in our day-to-day lives that can bring about such a vital impact on so many levels that are in keeping with our basic values that can benefit people, animals and the environment as deciding on this self-empowering diet that is the Vegan way of life. There are positive benefits again on every level if we all take just a step towards veganism and thus the vegan lifestyle can be an ongoing progression.

I am vegetarian and being vegan would simply be too much of letting go of almost all my favorite dishes (unless I can have a viable milk substitute for most of those items). But you do make "vegan" diet appetizing.

I also went vegetarian for a few years in my youth.  I could never imagine going vegan - yes, it offers many health benefits IF done properly, but you have to be very careful to combine the correct protein and vitamin sources or you can end up malnourished. 

That means it's a lot of work, even more than vegetarianism - and I gave that up because it's just so much easier, when you work full-time and have a long commute, to throw a chicken breast on the griller than have to clean, cut up and prepare several vegetables (yes, I know there are vegetarian convenience foods, but in those days most of them were inedible!)

This is very good information on the benefits of becoming a vegan. Right now I'm only at the stage of mostly vegetarian, because I do eat fish and chicken. This is a far cry from years ago when I was a meat eater everyday.

Good food for thought.  I never thought about becoming a vegan but you give some good reasons to ponder. To tell you the truth, I have not even thought of becoming a vegetarian. Oh boy, I guess I have lots to think about!

Bob! Thanks for coming by. I'm a vegan every Thursday and Friday night, a vegetarian every Monday and Tuesday. The rest of the week one day chicken, one day fish and one day beef. I just love vegetarian and vegan dishes other then that I'm a fraud.

Marisa! Thanks for coming by. I did the same years ago but then I moved my family to the farm and tried my hand at self sufficiency. As I'm alone now I made up a schedule for myself because I really love vegetarian and vegan dishes. I'm ashamed to say that I'm not against eating meat. Laringo! I'm a firm believer in a variety ... nothing in excess for health. For the past four years I've been following this type of diet and feel better for it. My blood pressure has dropped to almost normal without medication its been 8 month since I had one of my bad migraine attack. And I feel that I have a lot more energy too.

We'll see if this might be the trick to longevity in about thirty or so years

I really believe that we will do ourselves a lot of good by sticking to a versatile diet with nothing in excess.

Zsuzsy, when I had a veggie patch I used to often cook vegetarian dishes - not because I thought they were good for me, but just for the sheer pleasure of creating something scrumptious from things I had grown myself. When it was my own vegetables, I made the time! I can't get so enthusiastic about shop-bought ones, though...

Zsuzsy Bee, it does sound very healthy (and I do like veggie burgers), but I cannot imagine cutting milk products - such as cheece (no pizza!) and yogurt - and fish from my diet. I've tried tofu in a couples of dishes ... not impressed.

Marisa I know what you mean. I was at the grocery store yesterday trying to get some vegetables and they didn't impress me in the least. Today and tomorrow are my vegan days. I actually found a new recipe for tonight. If it's good I'll share it here.

C.W. As I confessed earlier I'm a fair-weather vegan and vegetarian. Only two days a week for each. I just reorganize my food intake. I find it's harder to stick to vegan and vegetarian dishes when BBQ season is on as I really love a steak and a beer but after a while it just became second nature. And really there is nothing nicer then a vegetarian pizza with extra cheese.

Thanks, Zsuzsy. I'm doing well - stable. Veggie pizzas ARE delicious ... but then, I also love Sweet Italian Sausag - especially in place of hamburger in Hamburger Helper dishes! I admit it, I'm just a wuss, and denying myself (unless, of course, it's fast food and/or just blatantly junk) is not my strong point. ;-)

When I am truly poverty stricken, I am a vegan. I can tell you, I get very tired of beans, peas and lentils! But I do still like them in times when my income rises and I am able to enjoy some other foods, too! I lean heavily toward fresh fruits and veggies and go easy on the lean meats, but I do want them a couple of times a week. Nice work! :)

I am, more or less, vegetarian simply because I'm so picky about what I eat. It's hard to be a proper vegetarian where I live though cos we don't have all the cool stuff you get at health food shops. Good hub, Zuz!

i was vegetarian for a few years then became vegan to increase the challenge. vegetarianism is a really great option because it makes me sad what they do to animals in slaughterhouses. but vegan is healthier and ive come to like a lot of foods i would have never tried if i was just vegetarian! a vegan diet sounds hard, but its not if you put your mind to it and find substitutes for your favorite foods/snacks.

trust me, its worth it! i have lost 10 lbs in two weeks and my skin has cleared up due to the unprocessed foods i eat.

i hope this helps for any vegetarians wanting to take it a step further:)

Mishy! Thank you for taking a look and for commenting. I'm not what you call either because I firmly believe that everything should be taken in moderation. So for the past few years I've been a 'meat-a-veg-a-vegan'. As an average I eat meat thee days a week and cook vegatarian and vegan two days of the week each. regards Zsuzsy

I could never become a vegetarian but I did tried some veggie burgers. They were just as good as a normal burger though. I did heard that vegetarians tend to live a longer healthier life.

Mayhmong thank you for taking a look and for commenting. I firmly believe that even taking just one day a week away from eating meat will give the body some well deserved rest. It can only make one healthier. I really love a lot of vegetarian and vegan recipes so staying away from meat is not a problem for me. But I also like meat of all sorts too. For me two vegetarian, two vegan and three meat days a week works well for me and I feel healthier for it.
