The Benefits of Backlinks
73Building Traffic with Backlinks
In today’s Internet-led world, the benefits of backlinks have never been more important when it comes to online visibility. Having your website, blog or Hub rank high with search engines is a key part to any online success, and backlinks are a crucial part of that success. So what are they and what are the benefits of backlinks?
Backlinks Made Simple
Simply put, backlinks are exactly what their name suggests – a link that directs itself back to your website. This could be from another blog or website that you own, or an external link from someone else altogether. Usually a backlink is simply the name of your website and an embedded link that leads straight to your site when someone clicks on it.
The benefits of having backlinks are many – the more links a website has coming into it, the more authoritive and popular it looks to the search engines. This in turn leads to the website in question climbing the search engine rankings, which as we all know is one of the main targets for any personal or business website owner. Additionally, backlinks offer a wonderful way of expanding your network of contacts – if people are reading something on one website and they see your link, they will usually check out your site to at least see what’s there. This could lead to new customers or sales if you’re a business, or simply new friends if you’re a blogger.
Backlinks and Relevancy
Although backlinks offer an invaluable (and free!) way to promote traffic to your website, you need to make sure that you use them properly. There are many backlink sites on the web that promise you “millions of visitors” to your website – these are usually ones to avoid, as they are more likely than not spamming sites.
Instead, to really benefit from backlinks, you need to make sure that they offer authority linkage. Despite the search engines offering higher placement for the more links a site has, it’s only if the links are relevant to the site in question. For example, if you have a website about vegetarian menus, you don’t really need a meat wholesaler linking to you, do you? If you actively wish to increase the backlinks to your site and keep on the right side of Google, Yahoo and the other search engines, make sure you seek out the websites and blogs that complement your own website.
Using Blogging and Forums for Backlinks
One of the very best methods of gaining backlinks is via the blogging community – when you read someone’s blog, you usually have the option to leave a comment. This is where you can leave a link to your website or blog for other people to check out – to really maximize this type of traffic, have your comment offer some kind of tip or advice on the preceding blog post. People reading your comment will think, “Hmm, this person knows what he or she is talking about – I’ll check them out!”
Online forums also offer excellent opportunities for backlinks. Part of setting up a profile on a forum is providing the URL for your website – use this in your signature, and every forum post you make will offer the potential of a backlink into your site.
As you can see, backlinks are a crucial part of any traffic-building exercise for website or blog owners. As long as you use them properly and are diligent when it comes to who links back to you, the benefits of backlinks will continue to grow for anyone online today.

Thank you so much. I have heard of this before but you have really explained it well. It is something I have been doing but you have provided tips so that I can do it more effectively! I must say you are def one of my favorite hubbers!!
Then make sure to spread the word...!!! lol, jk!! ;-)
@ Sam - I agree completely, yet bizarrely it's also one of the least utilized methods. Too many website owners seem enthralled with "keyword this" and "SEO that" which, while important, is only part of the overall solution.
@ Addie - Thank you! I'm gald to have been of help, and I hope that your results soon speak for themselves with regards your links. Let me know of any URL's of yours that might be relevant and I'll happily link to you! :)

Hahahaha, Priceless... ;-)
I should be able to write as well as you do,smallbizpro.
You're right on target, especially with the warning about thousands or millions of instant links or visitors. Anything that runs on full automatic will hurt your rankings when the search engines go after that tactic.
Hey Matt,
Thanks for reading - yep, that is one area that many people forget about. It's "let's just hit everything" and as you know, that can backfire spectacularly.
Thanks again,
Danny. :)
