By Uninvited Writer

This is part two in my list of the greatest 10 protest songs. You can view part one here. It seems that the majority of my favourite protest songs are anti-war...

Bruce Springsteen: This Land is Your Land

This song was written by Woody Guthrie in the 1940s. I like Bruce Springsteen's version of this song as well as his prologue.

" As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there And that sign said - no tress passin' But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin! Now that side was made for you and me"

Green Day - American Idiot

This is most recent of my favourite protest songs. I see it as a protest against the administration of George Bush.

"Don't want to be an American idiot. One nation controlled by the media; information age of hysteria. "

Phil Ochs: Here's to the State of Mississipi

The second Phil Ochs song on my top ten. This song was a protest against the racist policies of Mississippi during the 1960s.

"Here's to the people of Mississippi. Who say the folks up north, they just don't understand. And they tremble in their shadows at the thunder of the Klan. The sweating of their souls can't wash the blood from off their hands"

Pete Seeger - Where Have All the Flowers Gone

This is an anti-war song written by Pete Seeger in 1956.

"Where have all the young men gone? Gone for soldiers every one. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn? "

Barry McGuire - Eve of Destruction

This song got a lot of radio play in the late 60's. It protests the destruction of the world through hate and war.

"Think of all the hate there is in Red China, then take a look around to Selma, Alabama. You may leave here for 4 days in space, but when you return it's the same old place"

Strictly speaking, I'm not sure it's a protest song, but Alice's Restaurant Offers hilarious commentary on war, and the draft. I love most of the songs you've listed, but this one is my personal favorite. Great hub!

"CAN I GET ANOTHER AMEN, (amen!)

THERE'S A FLAG WRAPPED AROUND A SCORE OF MEN.

A GAG. A PLASTIC BAG ON A MONUMENT.

I BEG TO DREAM AND DIFFER FROM THE HOLLOW LIES.

THIS IS THE DAWNING OF THE REST OF OUR LIVES...ON HOLIDAY!
