Some of the greatest songs written are protest songs. As long as people have been writing songs, there have been protest songs. I have compiled my list of the 10 best protest songs. Most of them come from the 1960s and 1970s. Here are my top 5. I will publish the rest in another hub. Enjoy.

Bob Dylan : Blowin' in the Wind

This song has long been a favourite of mine. I love everything about this song; the vocals, the music, and especially the lyrics. It is a true classic. I especially"

"How many times must a man look up Before he can see the sky? Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have Before he can hear people cry? Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows That too many people have died?"

Phil Ochs: I Ain't Marching Anymore

Phil Ochs was a true master of the protest song. His unique vocals and his outstanding lyrics guarantee him a place in musical history.

"It's always the old to lead us to the war It's always the young to fall Now look at all we've won with the saber and the gun Tell me is it worth it all?"

Edwin Starr: War

This song was a staple on the radio in the early 70's. It has a catchy tune and a great beat, and the vocals are amazing.

"War! What is it good for? Absolutely nothin'"

CSNY: Ohio

This song was written in the aftermath of the shooting and killing of 4 students at Kent State University by the National Guard.

The line that really gives me chills is "what if you knew her and found her dead on the ground? How can you run when you know?"

John and Yoko: Give Peace a Chance

This song was originally recorded in a hotel room in Montreal during a "bed-in" by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1969.

"All we are saying...is give peace a chance!"

Woops- snap - I picked Dylan as 1 of my 10 too - though the other 9 are different - you're right though - I had a huge number from the Civil Rights and Vietnam era which I could have chosen! You're braver than me - I couldn't rank them!

Great hub. I did not know about Phil Ochs at all and I must have played OHIO in a lot of bars through the years but never caught that line.

Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's worth" same subject right? Kent St.?

I also own a 3CD set of Peace, Love and something..?

Sorry I can't remember but if you look on amazon and find it, it's cheap and thorough and would make a nice addition. Kudos.

p.s. You're always invited.

Phil Ochs is great...

For What It's Worth was written in 1967, so it's not about Kent State. But, it was about the protests againt the Vietnam War.

Good choices! You could add one sung by Joan Baez.
