The Simple Fact - You Must House Train Your Puppy

House training your puppy is critical to your sanity. I have a beagle. He's cute, lazy, fat, and about 11 years old. He eats, drinks, sleeps, goes outside to do his business, comes inside, wants a pat on the head and then repeats the cycle over and over again. I do appreciate the fact that I learned early on how to house train him as a puppy.

It wasn't always this easy though. Beagle puppies and all puppies for that matter are so cute that it's easy enough to overlook some of their potty accidents because they look at you with their big eyes and dance around you with their playful demeanor. They seem like they are too cute to discipline.

But wait! Don't fall for the looks. House training your puppy or even worse, having to house train your adult dog is a serious matter if you want people living in the same house with you and your dog, or if you want visitors to come back again. You don't want them to have to wear a clothespin on their nose, or crank up your air cleaner to the max every time they visit your house because you didn't learn the right way, right up front how to house train your puppy dog.

House Training Your Puppy - First Steps to Success

We all know that one of the major challenges of dog ownership, especially for those who are just getting their first dog, is the issue of house training your new puppy. It really isn't very hard to do if you have the basic knowledge you need and if you keep a positive attitude, knowing that you will be successful in a short period of time.

The New Arrival - The First Step to House Training Your Puppy

The first thing you need to do when you arrive home, is take your puppy outsiide. It's very likely that all of the excitement created by the car ride home, seeing all kinds of new people and having them excitedly petting your puppy, hearing unfamiliar sounds, seeing the scenery speeding by through the car window, will make your puppy have to go "outside" and potty. It is absolutely the best if you can arrange it so your puppy's first toilet break occurs outside, instead of inside. It is a fact that the more times your puppy relieves itself inside, the more likely your puppy is to do it again.

So, the first step is: Upon arrival at home, take your puppy outside to pee.

House Training Your Puppy - We're Outside, Now What?

You have your puppy outside. You need to choose a spot where you want to house train your puppy on a regular basis so you need to designate a potty spot and then put your puppy on the grass in that area.

Let your puppy just sniff around. Don't pet or play your puppy yet, because you don't want your puppy to confuse this area as a play area. She/he has to learn quickly that this part of the grass area is for potty breaks only.

When s/he starts to go, you need to come up with a phrase that you will use on a regular basis to associate with her potty breaks. Mine is "outside!" in a firm tone. You may want to say, "Go pee" or "potty time" or "outside" or "go wee wee". Use whatever phrase you like but make it short and simple so your puppy will be able to recognize it easily. It is also important that you use the same voice inflection each time, too. That enables your puppy to easily memorize and recognize the phrase and learn what it means.

Success! Your puppy made his/her first pee on your lawn! Now make a big fuss, give your puppy lots of praise, pat him / her on the head and then give your puppy a little dog treat.

Congratulations! You've completed the first step in house training your puppy.

House Training Your Puppy - You're Back Inside, Now What?

Your puppy did a great job. You have showered him/her with affection. Now it's time to bring your puppy inside. I have personally found that the same exit and entry points are also helpful. That way your puppy knows where to run to when it is time to go out.

Once inside the house, you must continue to house train your puppy and you must start right away. A little bit of effort up front will save you a lot of cleaning up work later.

Good tip about not playing with the puppy when you're trying to get him to learn his new potty area - makes a lot of sense - and doing it regularly to get him used to the area and realise what it's for.

Loved your site too.
