The Best Anti-Virus ?

AVG does not have a good removal rate It can't handle the more modern threats it also falsely reports removals , here's a few that I rate (not no.1's but worthy of consideration) Clam, NOD32 (32bit/64bit), Pc-Chillin and maybe Panda Titanium (Resource Magnet like Norton).

You 'could 'see my other answers for further insight. A good Antivirus depends a many 'modules' how strong is the heuristic engine, is its self-check/verification routine(s) air-tight? What are the Scanning Abilities of any particular Antivirus Program. Here's a few capabilities you should consider before you hand out that hard earned cash of yours!

Does the Antivirus in a nice shinny box or on a CD/DVD have:

On-access Scanning, Real-time Scanning, On-demand Scanning, Scheduled Scanning, Heuristic Scanning (Adaptable/Bloodhound/Polymorphic), Manual Scanning, Adware / Spyware Scanning, Script Blocking, Scan Compressed Files, Auto-Clean Infected Files, Quarantines Infected Files, Email POP3 Protection, Instant Messaging Protection, P2P/File Sharing Protection, Registry Startup Protection, Web Mail Protection and finally is there Detailed Virus Information available?

If this sounds like too much information, then go spend your money blindly on Symantec's or McAfee's Babies. Although I've seen Norton's Wonder get disabled, I've seen low risk Spy ware get past MacAfee's Guard. So obviously, no system is 100% safe, especially if the Computer is used intently in bad ways (i.e. P2P, Pron, Opening every Email you get) or just by someone new to all this and unaware of what Root kits, Zombies and Phishing is.

So there's a lot to consider if you do actually take care of your system, safe in a somewhat reserved manner and don't open every email you get. Human nature being what it is though, means we all 'fubar' occasionally. Rating any piece of software takes more than a 'Gut' feeling. I would suffice to say in my humble opinion that I consider having good grounds and insight into this industry (from both sides of the fence..) therefore again in my humble opinion I would say :

#1 Bit Defender (Excellent Options/In-depth capabilities/Good Price)

#2 Kaspersky (Very good Heuristic Engine/Support/Good Price)

#3 F-Secure (Same as both above although service and the GUI is somewhat lacking)

# Avast (Does it's Job/GUI can be changed/Good Price)

Honorable mention to :Pc-Chillin and Nod32 (One of the first to be 32/64bit transparent..) Norton and Mcafee but both these need work in their respective 'Adware/malware/spyware' Detection and Cleaning Code, they also Hog you machine(s) and eat virtual memory like Pacman eating.. Well you get the idea..
