The 5 Greatest Martial Arts Movies Ever Made

Martial arts movies, in general, are a genre that every one of all ages can find some enjoyment in watching. Whether you like comedy, drama or action films you can find all this wrapped into a martial art film and then some. Having watch martial films since I was a small child I have a certain pension for this particular brand of film making.

Here is a list of what, in my humble opinion, are the 5 best martial arts movies ever made:

Enter the Dragon Enter the Dragon
Price: $4.20
List Price: $12.98

Enter The Dragon

Enter the Dragon might not have been the best film acting wise, but as far as martial art films go it was definitely one of the best ever made. This 1973 break through movie starred Bruce Lee, John Saxon, Shih Kien, Angela Mao, Jim Kelly, Bob Wall and Bolo Yeung. Although it was the last film Bruce Lee ever made it was the one that solidified his status as one of the best martial artist to ever live. This was the film that defined the genre and brought martial arts into the mainstream, so now this genre is able to be viewed worldwide.

Drunken Master Drunken Master
Price: $6.45
List Price: $14.94

Drunken Master

Drunken Master has to be one of Jackie Chan’s best films.  Released in 1978 this filmed starred Jackie Chan, Siu Tien Yuen and Jang Lee Hwang.  This film was the one that brought Jackie into the mainstream in Hong Kong to be forever named the king of comedy kung-fu.  Combining his love of slapstick comedy with his martial arts ability in this film he embarks on a journey to learn the drunken master form to help save his teacher and his school.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Price: Too low to display
List Price: $14.94

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is cinematically the most beautiful martial art film out there.  This film, released in 2000, starred Chow Yun Fat, Michelle Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang.  It combines high wires with a compelling story and martial arts in the style of the old kung-fu theater films.  It is about a great warrior on a quest to regain is beloved jade sword.  This was originally a series of books that had been adapted into cinema.

Magnificent Butcher Magnificent Butcher
Price: $4.19
List Price: $9.98

Magnificent Butcher

Magnificent Butcher is one of the best Woo Ping directed films out there.  Released in 1979 this film starred Sammo Hung, Hoi San Lee, Tak-hing Yuen and Biao Yuen.  It takes you on a martial journey of a young butcher that is accused of crimes he didn’t commit and the lengths he goes in order to save himself. This is one of Sammo’s best performances early on in his career.

Ong-Bak - The Thai Warrior Ong-Bak - The Thai Warrior
Price: $3.61
List Price: $14.98

Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior

Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior was directed by Prachya Pinkaew and by far one of the best martial art movies ever made.  This 2003 filmed starred Tony Jaa, Petchtai Wongkamlao and Pumwaree Yodkamol.  This movie is about a young man in search of a statue that was stolen from his village.  With the use of Muay Thai to fight off all kinds of adversaries in his quest, this movie is one of the most visual appealing martial films.

So...

With these and a plethora of martial art films, good, bad or indifferent, out there for you to enjoy, my advice would be to run to your local video store or on-line merchant and pick yourself up some of the best movies you will ever see.

It is my opinion that the martial art movie "Ip Man" is THEE greatest martial art film BY FAR. Ip man was the teacher of Bruce Lee. His movie was made in 2008, and Ip Man is played by Hong Kong superstar Donnie Yen. This movie is by far the best martial arts film out there. You can watch the whole movie on youtube. Go and watch it!

Nice list, man. Ong Bak was brilliant as well. I think Hero starring Jet Li should be in this list as well. Superb cinematography and acting.

"Drucken Master" is by far the best film I've seen Jackie Chan in. The right amount of humor and fighting. It's sad so few have seen it...keep spreading the word.

I know what you mean Bbudoyono, Enter the Dragon was great for its time, but things have moved on and evolved since then. I still like the moer realistic style of those old films though, even though all the wire stuff is very impressive.

Enter The Dragon one of Bruce Lee's finest under takings will always be revered as one of the best martial arts films of all time. He like Jackie Chan insisted on doing there own stunts, and keeping originality in there craft.

Now this is 2009 and the film industry has change from the days of old. When you get a chance check out some Cheap Discount DVD Movies

Thursday, 24 September 2009: The greatest martial artist of all time was the late great Bruce Lee. I was very fortunate to meet his wife, Linda and kids, Brandon & Shannon when they were very young in 1975 in a martial arts tournament that I was competing in. I am so blessed by God that at 50 years old, I can still do the splits. Linda and kids were the guest of honor. I still have the photos. After the great Bruce Lee, I like Jet Li. For the first time in history, U.S America has two African American really good martial artist, Wesley Snipes and new on the scene is Michael Jai White. Everyone really needs to see Michael in "Undisputed-2-Last Man Standing" and on DVD "Blood & Bones". He technique is really great. NKD

Bruce Lee once said that he wanted to see martial arts elevated to the point that fight scenes in movies and TV would include martial arts and no one would think twice about it.

Watch fight scenes now and you'll see that he got his wish.

As far as the best, I love Enter The Dragon, but I gotta go with Chinese Connection.

Lee taking out the entire Japanese dojo single handed?

Priceless.

I wouldn't have considered Behind enemy lines to be a martial arts movie, nor Troy really, but they are great movies.
