The Best Gifts For New Moms
83
I have recently become a new mom. It is very difficult to describe in words how it feels. In only an instant, enormous feelings push their way out with such force, that it is just amazing to find out there is SO MUCH LOVE to give to a such a little bundle.
Two months after I had my baby, it was my birthday. My husband, lovely as he is, decided to get me a Syrian chest as a gift. Really, the chest is a beautiful piece, and now that my son is 10 months old I can appreciate it even more. At that time though, when I was feeling drained, sleep deprived and exhausted from feeds, diapers, cries, poop, pee, sore arms, sore EVERYHING, I just thought "huh, what am I supposed to do with this Syrian chest? I wonder if its a magic box that I can open, jump in (because the thing is that big) and come back out fresh and renewed."
Anyway, the Syrian chest is in fact a lovely antique piece that I love. But if you have no clue what kind of gift a new mom would REALLY love, and the time comes to give her a present, be it for Christmas, a birthday, mother's day, or just because (even better), then allow me as a new mom to give you some suggestions. Yes, a great party dress or beautiful shoes or flowers are always nice presents, just not for a time when the new mom is feeling fat, ugly, exhausted and even a bit blue.
The number 1 thing every new mom needs is some free time once in a while. Time for herself, without noise, worries, or disturbances. So, offer to take care of the baby (all on your own). Take him for a stroll, for a visit to the grandparents, or just simply somewhere where she will not hear the baby cry and worry. Really, do take my advice to heart and consider getting her something like this:
A Home Spa
A dreamed of, wished for, well deserved warm bath, candles, treats, amazing body products, lotions, salts, and more. Everything she could possibly need to produce a spa in her own home.
Any new mom would die for this Home Spa in a basket. If you top it with drawing the bath for her, setting the candles, the music and the ambiance. Making her favorite cup of tea or coffee and of course taking care of baby. She will LOVE you for it!!!
Try it....surprise her!!! Pamper her a little, she won't get spoiled. Oh and do not forget to do it more than once. A couple of times a month won't hurt. Think about it...Doesn''t she really deserve it???
The Step Diet: Count Steps Not Calories
Every new mom longs to get back in shape as soon as she possibly can. In reality, it is not as simple as having the baby and then the pounds just coming off automatically and gradually.
It will be even harder if she had a c-section, as she has to take it easy for quite some time. Or if she is breast-feeding it is not an option to cut back on calories, for the baby still feeds on what she eats.
So she is going to need the best possible solution to feel she is in progress with the weight loss. The very best solution I found was walking. It kills several birds with one stone. She gets some exercise, it is good for her emotional well being, she can take the baby along and you could even go with her.
Now, the Step Diet book gives all the guidelines and motivation needed to get moving. Helps set goals, feel good about them and see results. It gives wonderful ideas to keep on moving throughout the day and to incorporate this into your lifestyle slowly. These measures are bound to stick and so the results will be there for a life time.
The pedometer is the very best you could possibly get and for such a good price. You really need to buy book and pedometer, as it is what gives an accurate count of the steps taken. It is light, easy to use, easy to read, has a large display screen, it calculates calories and has a 7 day memory to see the progress made.

A Giftscription Magazine Giftcertificate (50 magazines to choose from)
Sometimes, something as simple as curling up in bed or on the couch with a nice cup of cocoa or tea and her fav magazine, is all she needs to refuel and go on.
This Magazine Giftcertificate gives her the option of chosing amongst 50 different magazines and getting a year subscription of her choice. The subscription can be started in two easy steps and redeemed either online or by regular mail.
Diamonds
Because "diamonds are a girl's best friend!!"
If you are thinking that the only occasion for diamonds is an engagement...well you're WRONG. Any other important and memorable occasion is as good of a time to give a diamond. And what better occasion than being a new mom.
Get her something to match her engagement ring. Earrings are always wonderful, but some women prefer pendants, or go the extra step and get both.
Oh, and don't just give her the box period. Make sure you tell her why you decided on getting diamonds. Do tell her that a diamond is the least she deserves for being the best mom.
A Book
A book is always a great companion. Reading is one of the activities new moms prefer.
The book "Porn For New Moms" is a hilarious book that will lift up her spirit and get a good laugh out of her. But make sure you also give her a book she really wants to read. If you are not sure of which book she would like and you want to give her a surprise, then buy her a bookstore gift certificate and place it inside the book for her to find.
Write her a nice personal note in the book. She will love it!!

Other Gift Ideas For New Moms
If you want to make the new mom feel very special with a gift, think hard before you set your mind on something. Put yourself in her shoes and think of what would make her happy in the present time.
Here a few other suggestions:
- A subscription to Netflix or any other movie rental service.
- A Gift Certificate for yoga or a massage or manicure and pedicure (ask her what she would prefer).
- Talk to her friends and see how you can arrange for her to get a make-over (or go to her usual hair dresser and arrange it). Then just take her without her knowing.
- A nice relaxing evening with husband. The Home Spa could be of use here!!
If you still can't find something within these suggestions, then just ask her. You can always think of a nice different way of giving her what she asked for in order to make it a surprise.
Hope this helps you find a good gift that she deserves. Just remember to love her, understand her and be supportive of her. She will ADORE you for that!!!

Any Suggestions, Questions, Or Comments???
Thank you for the nice comment Ardie. I hope it gets to some new dads out there...for the sake of moms
Great suggestions...I'll have to consider some of these for my sister-in-law who is pregnant. Also, check the spelling of your 'Home Spa' heading - it says 'Homa Spa'.
Ryan Hupfer, thanks for your comment & for catching the spelling mistake ;)
Thank you sooo much for this wonderful hub. My daughter just had her first child on December 1st--pictures are online here! I think that I will get her that Porn for new momies book! Her inlaws live real close to her so they are there to take her out and give her a break, but that book---I want her to laugh because she is having a time of it with the new one that wants to fuss and wants to be held all the time.
Again Thanks for the ideas--they are really appreciated!
Lady Guinevere, Thank you for your nice comment. I am glad you found it useful that was the purpose. And I'm sure your daughter will really enjoy the book!!!
Congrats for your grandchild!!!
Thank you and I am ordering it right now!!
Awesome!!! Congratulations again!!!
Great ideas for gifts, but our kids are all in their 30s. I do, however, buy things for her without any reason or write her a poem and put it on her pillow and let her find it when she goes to bed now and then. She seems to like that quite a lot.
Johnny Yuma
Johny Yuma, Thank you for your comment. Your kids are lucky to have a father who still spoils them!!! Merry Christmas
I think you've helped a lot of new moms out with this Hub :)
good one
This is good advice! The Pron book looks hilarious, and a spa treatment is ALWAYS appreciated -- no mater how old the children are.
New mom's (with a brand new baby) also appreciate homemade cookies (no chocolate, if she is nursing) and a cleaner home... at least the laundry -- and match the socks! Another thing that really helped me was the experience of older moms -- reminding me that as long as the baby is loved and taken care of, it is okay if their first bed is a large cardboard box. :D
Christina, Thanks for your comment. You are absolutely right about those other gifts you mention!!!
Awwww.. why didn't I read it a week back? I gifted some silly stuff to my friend...some kid's clothes... But good to give in my next visit to her :D
