There are very many small pets that are suitable for a small apartment. Probably the best choice is the obvious fish, they can be in a simple fish bowl or an elaborate tank. Hermit crabs are also a great choice, they require very little maintenance are are pretty inexpensive.

The next pet that would be suitable for a small spaces are rodents. That includes mice, hamsters, rats, gerbils and guinea pigs. They are all inexpensive pets and pretty easy to care for.

Birds are another answer for your small space, there are many breeds to choose from. The most popular of bird species are cockatiels, finches, love birds, parrots and Macaws. Before you make the choice of the bird that might be right for you please note that a large bird like the Macaw and Parrot have a very long life span (50-70 years) and require a lot of attention, They are a lifelong commitment! Do not purchase these birds if you are not willing to commit to the care that they require. I also would not recommend these large birds for a small space as they take up a lot of space with their large cages.

Some more great pets for small spaces are reptiles, though they are not for everyone. Some popular choices would include snakes, Iguanas, lizards, geckos, chameleons, skinks, and bearded dragons. These pets require only a very small space for their habitat and are very easy to care for. They only need their tanks or cages cleaned and fed adequately.

Amphibians- Frogs, newts, salamanders, turtles, crocodiles, and alligators. I think that it is obvious that crocodiles and alligators should not be considered when you live an a small space. These animals start out small enough but quickly grow to huge sizes. Frogs, newts, salamanders and turtles require minimal living space and are easy to care for.

If cats are not the animal for you a small breed dog may be the thing. Not all small dogs are great for small spaces though, some are high energy and need to able to be outside. A rat terrier for example is a very small breed but has high energy, they do not make a good pet for small spaces.
