The Best Skateboard Deck For Your Skateboard

The following chart is a standard guide for deck size, as compared to the users height. As stated, it is only a guide and the measurements are not written in stone, but it is a good starting point for length reference.
Compare the skater’s height to this chart:
Under 4’ = 29” or smaller
4’ to 4’10” = 29” to 30” long
4’10” to 5’3” = 30.5” to 31.5” long
5’3” to 5”8” = 31.5” to 32” long
5”8” to 6’1” = 32” to 32.5” long
Over 6’1” = 32.4” and up

How big are your feet?
Most skateboards are around 7.5” to 8" wide. They can be wider or narrower, depending on the manufacturer's offerings. People may not realize it when purchasing, but remember, If you have larger feet, get a wider skateboard deck.
When you have the general size you'll need in mind, you can change it a bit, depending on what you want to do with your board. Skateboarding transition or vert? If you want to ride a lot of ramps or spend most of your time riding at the skate park, then you'll want a wider board. Normally about 8” wide or more.
If planning on riding streets more, and performing more technical tricks, then your skateboard should be optimally under 8” wide. If ing is more your style, and aren't planning on doing tricks often, then a bigger, wider board should be your choice. In this instance, comfort rules over style.
Of course, this is just a basic guideline. Changes can be made as you see fit and are comfortable with. Just remember, if you are purchasing a skateboard as a gift for someone else, be aware of graphics on the deck! Though it may seem the least important, it may be the most important to the rider. The graphic should display the riders interest, not yours. It should be within his age group and, if possible, reflect his stated (and latest) hot item within his group of friends. Imagine yourself working on a construction site. You certainly wouldn't want to be seen by your work buddies driving up in a pink volkswagon.
