The Best and Worst Funeral Songs
85
Oftentimes, we use music to express our emotions and say things we are unable to say. Funerals are no exception. Music is a wonderful way to help pay tribute to a life lost. There are some wonderful funeral songs out there, but there are also some really bad ones. I feel that there is a time and a place for certain types of music, so I have created a list of what I consider to be the best and worst funeral songs. Keep in mind that this is just my opinion as a funeral director, and I am in no way trying to dissuade you from playing whatever song you deem appropriate and necessary. The following list is a mere suggestion, not funerary law :)

Somewhere Over The Rainbow / What A Wonderful World (Israel Kamakawiwo'ole)
"What A Wonderful World"?......... No.........What a wonderful song!! This beautifully crafted mellow tune by Hawaiian Native Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is a perfect funeral song. Since it's not harsh or too short, it provides an atmosphere conducive to relaxation and recalling old memories. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.

Elvis: Ultimate Gospel
Price: $6.82
List Price: $9.99 |
Amazing Grace (Elvis Presley)
Although pretty much any gospel song by Elvis Presley is perfect for a funeral, his rendition of "Amazing Grace" is especially beautiful. Harmonic and heart-wrenching, this is a fabulous version of the popular funeral song. Elvis' "In The Garden" is equally outstanding. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.

I'm Your Fan
Price: $7.24
List Price: $13.96 |
Hallelujah
I just heard my new favorite funeral song. It's sung by John Cale. It seems to really sing to the hardships one goes through during the time of a death. It was on that movie Shrek, if you saw it, and it is a truly beautiful song.

To Where You Are (Josh Goban)

When I Get Where I'm Going (Brad Paisley & Dolly Parton)
These two Country music super-stars sound like they were meant to sing together in this emotional commemorative song. This tune isn't sad. It's full of faith and hope, and it's a perfect song for someone that loved country music. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.

Jackpot - The Best Bette ( Amazon Exclusive Bonus Track)
Price: $14.99
List Price: $18.98 |
Wind Beneath My Wings (Bette Midler)
Bette Midler has such a rich voice and it really comes out in this timeless inspirational ballad. Yes, this is a popular funeral song, but it's only popular because it's so good! It's perfect for commemorating that hero in your life. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.

Back to Bedlam
Price: $2.00
List Price: $18.98 |
Goodbye, My Lover (James Blunt)
This is a very modern and very popular funeral song. I chose to include it in the "best" list because James Blunt has a way of filling his songs with such gorgeous emotion. He really brings the listener into the song. It's mainly for a lost lover. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.

Circle Of Life
Price: $0.99
|
Circle of Life (Elton John)
Made popualr by the movie The Lion King, this song has been played at many funerals and memorial services. Elton John does a great job singing this inspirational and hopeful song about the continuity of life. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.

Tarzan

List Price: $11.98 |
You'll Be In My Heart (Phil Collins)
This wonderfully upbeat song is inspiring and performed beautifully. Every funeral attendee will be able to appreciate this song and gleen some personal meaning from it. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.

Holly Dunn - Milestones: Greatest Hits
Price: $6.99
List Price: $11.98 |
Daddy's Hands (Holly Dunn)
Even though this song is meaningful, it is only meaningful to the daughter(s) if the decedent is a man. Not everyone at the funeral will appreciate this song. They'll just be forced to endure the twangy country tune as they wait for the service to get over with. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.

My Love-Ultimate Essential Collection
Price: $9.71
List Price: $17.93 |
Because You Loved Me (Celine Dion)
"Because You Loved Me" has been played at many funerals because a lot of people find meaning in it. Unfortunately, this song isn't about the decedent. It's about the person singing it. In order to adequately pay tribute to the deceased loved one, you should choose a song that isn't about "you" and filled with that "me, me, me, my, my, my" business. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.

Bad Boy's 10th Anniversary... The Hits
Price: $11.59
List Price: $18.98 |
Missing You (P. Diddy with Faith Evans)
Faith Evans does a nice job in this radio hit, but Puff Daddy's part is explicit and not suitable for a funeral service. The chorus is nice and catchy, but this song has references to drug use. There are, however, other versions of this song that are funeral worthy. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.
|
The Who: The Ultimate Collection
Price: $12.68
List Price: $19.98 |
Stairway To Heaven (Led Zeppelin)
I have played this song for a few funeral services, and it is incredibly long. People of the generation certainly like the poetic lyrics and electirc guitar, but this song is about drug abuse. There's no mistaking that. Buying drugs. That's it. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.
|
Greatest Hits
Price: $7.74
List Price: $13.98 |
Mary Jane's Last Dance (Tom Petty)
As much as I adore Tom Petty's music, I have to say that this is a bad funeral song. Lots of people try to make it work, but this song is clearly about marijuanna. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.
|
Fire of Unknown Origin
Price: $3.57
List Price: $6.99 |
The Reaper (Blue Oyster Cult)
I like the way this song sounds, and every time I hear it I can't help but think of that hilarious SNL skit with Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken :) Anyway, this song is generally about not thinking about the consequences of your actions and not being afraid to die. It's more about dying gracefully and less about commemorating a life lost. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.
|
Celine Dion's Let's Talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste (33 1/3)
Price: $5.90
List Price: $12.95 |
My Heart Will Go On (Celine Dion)
Overdone. That's what this song is. Ever since the movie Titanic, everyone wants to play this song at funerals. Not only is it hackneyed, this song is incredibly slow and terribly nasally. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.
|
The Ultimate Hits
Price: $10.88
List Price: $23.98 |
The Dance (Garth Brooks)
As much as I love Garth Brooks, this song was not written with the intent to be played at funerals. Although it is a song about treasuring a special memory, it is also about a relationship gone wrong. And that, my friends, makes for a not-so-commemorative song. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.
|
Complete Clapton
Price: $10.70
List Price: $24.98 |
Tears In Heaven (Eric Clapton)
This is one of the most beautiful memorial songs I have ever heard. Eric's emotions just leap from the lyrics and the guitar is phenomenal. This is under the "specialty" songs because this tune is best suited for a child's funeral. Eric Clapton wrote this song after the death of his son. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.
|
Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen-The Album
Price: $6.49
List Price: $18.98 |
My Immortal (Amy Lee)
I'm talking about the Amy-Lee-and-orchestra version here, not the Evanescence rock/pop version. You must hear this song and feel free to let her angelic voice bring tears to your eyes. This is a "specialty" tune because it is about a life lost to suicide for the most part. Click Here to read the lyrics to this song.
|
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Price: $8.06
List Price: $13.98 |
Candle in The Wind (Elton John)
This is a beautiful song of remembrance by Elton John. The first version was released in commemoration of Marilyn Monroe. In 1997, it was rewritten for Princess Diana. This is a "specialty" song because the lyrics directly relate to those two people and wouldn't work for anyone else. So, the CD version shouldn't be played at a funeral, but live singers can change the names in the song to pay tribute to your loved one. Click Here to read the Marilyn Monroe version lyrics. Click Here to read the Princess Diana version lyrics.
As you can see, music is an excellent way to express intense emotions
But there are lots of poems and verses out there too that are just as meaningful for funeral services.CLICK HERE for an excellent resource. I hope this has helped.

The funeral song index was great - thnx for providing- I am a hospice social worker & I often have opportunity to help familys with final arrangement decisions. this is a great resource to share with them.
What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
That is really long list. Awesome. Thanks
Here's something on similar topic: http://hubpages.com/hub/funeralreadings
Satisfied Mind by Jeff Buckley and Brokedown Palace by The Grateful Dead.
try aselin debison's "say goodbye to you" and her version of "Somewhere over the Rainbow." Brings you to tears... will definitely have that in my funeral.
Also, Chantal Kreviazuk's "Say Goodnight not Goodbye"
thanks for the wonderful post.
Food for thought! interesting hub. great information.
You should definitely add Boys II Men - It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday
It's a beautiful song but definitely right for a funeral.
Very interesting! Sadly, for one reason or another, funeral songs are something I've spent much time considering. I feel a funeral song should be personal, something that means something to those who knew the deceased; the idea of picking a song from a list on a website seems awful and if I have to sit through "My Way" one more time at a funeral I think I'll have to walk out. No, for me (and my family who feel the same) music is personal, powerful and can express feelings on our behalf. My Mother has already told me she'd like Willie Nelson's "Rock me to Sleep" as we enter and Willie Nelson's "There's nothing I can do about it now" as we leave. It's not that she's a Willie Nelson fan - she's a music fan - but those songs express how she feels. For me it'll be Nick Cave's "Bless His ever loving Heart" as my firends/family enter and Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross" as I start to burn!
Ah, that was fun!
Nee
Here is a song that would be good for a memorial video. You're Near by Amy Helmuth. www.amyhelmuth.com
I have been listening to brother "IZ's" Music. The man was a class act all the way around. I can barely begin understand the impact, on all the people of Hawai'i who's heart he has touched. I have been away, a long time, perhaps it's time to return home. I miss many of my brother, sisters, aunties, may your loving souls be kept in god's grace.
Keoahu
This is a great list. Can you explian to me why funeral homes always play, "Send in the Clowns?" What does that even mean? When my uncle passed away, my sister and I were discussing this as it was playing. I said, "Maybe it means the party is over." We both giggled our way through the funeral. Everyone thought we were wracked with sobs instead of gaffaws!
I honestly don't know. Hmmm.. I've never had to play "Send In The Clowns" at a funeral before, but I think you're on the right track about the party being over. I'm glad you laughed at the funeral.... they don't always have to be sad :)
I would like to have the Rainbow Connection by Kermit the Frog played at my funeral
i'm sorry no way is stairway to heaven about drugs. you would have to be deaf to say that.
I definitely want the Rolling Stones' "Shine A Light" played during my funeral.
May the good Lord shine a light on you, Make every song your favorite tune.
Always look on the bright side of life-Monty python
Eva Cassidy's version of "Somewhere over the rainbow" and "Songbird" are beautiful also!
This one is overdone too. Go Rest High on That Mountain by Vince Gill. I LOVE the song and will have it played for my husband if he goes before I. But only because it fits him especially about seeing the angels faces when they hear his sweet voice sing. My husband has sang all his life, with a voice so rich and beautiful. And, with all his health problems, his life has been troubled. But I hear it played at funerals where none of this is relevant to the deceased.
Goodbye My Lover is about being cheated on, not dying. Watch the music video.
Fly by Celine Dion and also Angel by Sarah McLachlan
ONE PERFECT DAY BY LYDIA DENKER
For my late husband's funeral I picked "All I want is You" by U2 before the service and "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zepplin as they carried out his coffin, He was only 36yrs old, we both grew up with this music and it was a tribute to him. I think it's all a matter of one's taste and age. No way is stairway to Heaven a "worst" song, it depends on the circumsances of the situation. My husband committed suicide. He had to buy his stairway into heaven. From the age of 18, he always wanted to play Pink Floyd's "Goodbye Cruel World" at his funeral, which I think is horrible and morbid, and I like Pink Floyd.
My husband passed away suddenly at 53, I had Eric Claptons Tears in Heaven & at the end Bob Marley Three Little Birds, as we left you could hear "everythings going to be alright" he loved reggae.Alot of these songs are food for thought, but I chose ones that signified the man ,my husband Jon was, I also played "Stand by Me" as we always stood by each other.
a welsh hymn - Gwahoddiad - sung in the welsh language is a very powerful song for a funeral. i always get goosebumps when we sing it in our choir...
Have to say the song i want at my funeral would be "Who knew" by pink, love it to pieces and hits the right spots!
Why a sung song as opposed to a melodic tune. I like Pachelbel's Canon as my choice for a funeral song.
My Uncle had, Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye as the coffin was led out. Lightened the atmosphere tremendously.
The Ancient Pines by Loreena McKennett is a haunting beautiful farewell song that will be played at my funeral.
My brother told me he wants Trust by The Cure played at his funeral when the time comes.
I did it my way...Frank Sanatra
Bridge Over Troubled Waters....... what more can I say....
your comments on songs like stairway to heaven & (don't fear) the reaper clearly shows that you don't know anything about those stuff at all. those kind of songs are highly metaphorical and for years people have been discussing what they might be telling. so next time please avoid direct conclusions like "this song is about drugs".
Ha! Opinions are opinions. Nobody said you had to agree with me. I'm just writing from a mortician's standpoint. If you don't like my opnions.... well, I have others :)
I think two of the worst funeral songs would be (another one bites the dust) and (Highway to hell).
I think you should do Staying Alive - Bee Gees
Don't let 'em get to you. We're all entitled to our opinions, even if they're wrong. ;) A couple of my favs are "And When I Die" by laura Nero and "If I Ever Leave This World Alive" by Flogging Molly
I've left specific instructions for Mr E's Beautiful Blues - The Eels, for my funeral service. I'm sarcastic by nature, so a song with a chorus "God damn right, it's a beautiful day" will be perfect.
andy griggs- if heaven
diamond rio - i believe
i like those 2
Life Without You by Stevie Ray Vaugahn!
A great song is World Spins Madly On by The Weepies. "I thought of you and where you'd gone and the world spins madly on...I watched the stars through my window sill, the whole world is moving and I'm standing still." Sad, but sweet with gentle voices and guitar. It's such a comforting song.

Very enlightening! I must say I've never given this any thought.
