The Bible - Nothing New in 2000 Years. Really?

On a recent plane journey from Los Angeles to Tokyo, I was seated next to an American gentleman who introduced himself to me as Don, a retired physician (or Doctor in plain English). He was an intelligent likeable person, and I was enjoying our light-hearted conversation, which was peppered with laughs and smiles.

Before long however, as is often the way with fervent religious believers, he felt compelled to ask his $64’000 question. Do you read the Bible, he asked me. Are you a believer? I have remarked in the past that these questions are often accompanied by an air of superiority, as from someone who considers themselves already “saved”. Poor me, condemned to burn in hell forever because I have not been “saved”, and of course it is the unspoken mission of most bible-followers to “save” the “unsaved”.

In an attempt to answer his question, I explained to him that I do believe in God, and that I also believe that we each have a spark of the divine within us, and in fact that we are all already part of, and an extension to, “God”. The Bible teaches that we are separate from God, whereas I believe that we are not, never have been, and never can be separate from the Divine, and therefore the notion of being “saved” has no meaning. How can you save one part of God from another part of God?

Don listened patiently, and then replied that this was not what the Bible teaches and therefore it cannot be true. He had made his choice. He had chosen to follow the Bible word for word. The truth was in the Bible, and all else was untruth.

All of my arguments and reasoning, in fact whatever I said, met with the same response. With a smile Don would say “that’s not what it says in the Bible, therefore I don’t believe it. I believe that the Bible is the word of God”. An educated, erudite man, Don was unwilling to use any rational reasoning or discernment whatsoever when it came to his faith. He could see no further than the printed word on the pages of the Bible resting in his hands.

And he was genuinely concerned for me. He was concerned that unless I accepted Jesus as my saviour and surrendered to Him, then my fate was to burn in hell for eternity. His Bible was the only way.

Excuse me for interposing some reasoning here, but I cannot accept that inherently good persons such as Mahatma Gandhi or the Dalai Llama are condemned forever to burn in hell, simply because they have chosen a path to God other than that prescribed in the Bible. I put this to Don, and I was astonished by his reply which was “Yes, I wish it was otherwise but according to the Bible, even Gandhi is now burning in hell for eternity”.

How can any thinking person, who considers this with an open heart and mind possibly conclude that the only way for anyone to live their life is to follow word for word a book which was written over 2’000 years ago? And worse, once decided, once the choice is made, there is absolutely no room for discussion. Even if Jesus himself were to reappear his words would be refuted unless there is a mention of such a coming in the Bible. Likewise, any other spiritual leaders and their words, past, present and future are consistently and vehemently ignored. How sad.

How sad, that all subsequent books, and there have been many, whose words have been divinely inspired just like the Bible, are completely ignored and have no relevance at all. I mentioned to Don the “Conversations with God” series of books authored by Neale Donald Walsch. I defy anyone who reads these books with an open mind not to be touched by the words which carry such an energy, such simplicity and power. For me, these are undoubtedly divine words.

Or then again, take Eckhardt Tolle and his “Power of Now” books, which even achieved mainstream acceptance after being showcased by Oprah Winfrey. Nope, completely irrelevant as well.

The thing is, there have been advancements in all forms of human endeavour in the last 2’000 years – including in human consciousness. We are now ready to accept a more complete version of “the truth” and we are also able, if we open our minds, to handle new concepts of what God and Divinity really mean. We needed religions and Gods’ intermediaries 2’000 years ago. We don’t need them any more. It is time to awaken to who we really are. And there are many, many “new” books containing the divinely inspired words to help us do this.

Again sadly, neither Don nor any of my other would-be saviours over the years, were even prepared to read any of the books which I have proposed as also containing the word of God. To their mind, every divinely inspired book that has been written in the last 2’000 years can be piled up and set fire to; an enormous bonfire – the bonfire of the Bible followers. Nothing new of any value in 2’000 years? How very sad.

Sannyasinman I was moved by your conversation with the Doctor on your trip. I can't help but imagine the thoughts that ran through your mind. You handle it very well. I am so proud of you.

What I find absolutely hard to swallow is how people can put their own interpretation on a book written a couple thousand years ago... by numerous people in languages that are not native and then "Speak as if it was the word of God". It's crazy. Who knows what really happened back then. I read a historical account of records found in 2 different cities about a war that supposedly took place about the time of the Bible and each story was written by a different person and both claimed victory! The average person has no idea what a Gregarian Calendar or a Julian Calender and what that means. These books were not written on paper... no paper back then. They were held by secret societies. Many believe Christianity was simply a tool in the Roman Empire. There were many people in History that were similar to Jesus... including Horace. One must open their minds... but the "Believers" can not. They accept what they are told... and that becomes their truth.

I hope that readers of your hub will take the time to watch this simple video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNf-P_5u_Hw

Then open their eyes to the real possibility that what they believe may not in fact be true... it's only what they want to be true.

Hi MikeNV,

Thank you for your comments. I read the hub that you mentioned. Fascinating stuff and difficult to refute.

Neither the Old or the New Testament is self authenticating, yet just speaking the words in it are supposed to be the truth.

Why would God need the Bible to communicate with us?

The communication from God would be directly to your soul or at least your brain. Having someone read the Bible and tell us what it means puts an unnecessary middleman into the process. Reading is subjective and a passage means something different to each reader.

Surely, this wouldn't be a good method to follow God.

As for Mahatma Gandhi or the Dalia Llama, who can judge their eternal fate? I agree with you that we should let God judge these men. Heck, we can't even judge each other well in our short lives, let alone for eternity.

Following Jesus' teachings seems to me to be more about love and acceptance than condemnation, but I think it takes humility to see it that way. And I had to realize that not only am I not perfect, but the people who "preach" Christianity are pretty messed up people too. It's funny that that's what I like about Christianity. It's for messed up people to find peace. My pride seems to take me further from God, which may be what "hell," is like, the absence of God. I have no real idea though.

Since you believe God is automatically part of you, and that you can't be separated from God, then we disagree. I will not begin to try to judge your fate. If I have any power to do anything, it is from God. Since I believe God is all powerful, He most certainly has the power to do anything He wants for you. I am one Jesus follower who is rooting for you to go to heaven.

Refreshing hub! Love it. It feels good to know that there are people who share my vision of God and spirituality. May be this sound heretic, but I believe God has talk through this hub. :D And through others! God now uses the internet! LOL

dentist83, thanks for your comments and I am so glad that you liked the article. I also believe that God uses many means to talk to us all, and that our task is to learn how to listen.

I really like your article. I believe in God in my own way. I think of God as being a brilliant minded alien power so advanced that it could create a universe. I do not know. who the heck am I to define God. I do not know anything! For some reason I love God with all my heart. I believe something wonderful happened once in my life because of something profoundly advanced. I like the Bible , but it is a book that probably has some fantasy in it. Some things in it sound pretty advanced like the Genisis part. I could go on forever on the subject. It is interesting. GBY My Friend.

Nice hub. Well written. But I think it is foolishness to ignore a book just because it was written 2000 years ago. There are lot of things which we can follow even this modern age. Love your neighbor as yourself is the greatest commandment God has given us to live a happy life. That is what missing in this world. King Solomons wisdom recorded in the Book of Proverbs. There are many things which are relevant and acceptable in this modern age.

Many people witnessed through out the age that the Bible inspired and guided them. If that is so, what is the benefit in burning the Bible?

My humble request is that just read Bible carefully and take what is beneficial to you?

May God Bless you

Hi sanny.

The most significant version of the bible to me is the Gutenberg Bible. The first book ever printed with modern technology - moveable type, on a press.

Why print this first instead of any other book?

Because... it's THE best-seller.

There is plenty of valuable philosophy in the bible, even for an atheist. I keep one myself. The power of the book comes it's own history; can you think of another text that has been shared through so many generations? It's fascinating.

Having said that... I think limiting yourself to only one source of faith is the same thing as limiting yourself to one source of food. I'm thinking, Grapefruit Diet. Not so healthy.

I'm smiling at the concept of Jesus being denied because his return was not written.

Peace

Jen

Thanks for this thought provoking hub!

You'd be surprise how many religious fanatics live in NYC and spread the word on the streets, on the subway and buses. When they approach me for a 'discussion' - if a 'no' is not enough - I tell them 'I have my beliefs which are to be respected as I respect theirs' - I do not allow a debate or a discussion, after all these are just strangers who should respect me as an elder and a person who is supposed to have the same amount of religious freedom as they do.

I am what I am and it works very well for me. I owe no explanation. I believe that is what we are alleged to have here - religious freedom - to believe even not believe. But for some folks - it seems to work only one way. Not my problem then.

BKC - yes, I agree with you. There is no debate possible with someone who's mind is already made up and has only one objective - to make you think like him. Thanks for your comment.

Not to believe in God is the same as not to believe in yourself. There is no doubt that we have a little spark of divine within us. The Bible (according to Joseph Murphy) is a psichological book which must not be read word by word. It was has a meaning perfectly suitable to nowadays!
