The Bible a Tool NOT a Weapon Part II
65spiritual journey - Bible - a tool NOT a weapon
In my last article I wrote about how I view the stories in the Bible as parables and do not take them literally. I have set myself on a journey joining hubpages to further my spiritual path.
Too often people use the passages in the Bible to control. I have had people tell me that they have been told by God to do or say such and such; thus, this gives them the right to dictate to others how to act and behave. While I cannot say what God has said to others, I do believe that He speaks to each of us in ways that are intended for us to love and not to hurt. God never means for us to use his messages to be controlling.
I teach and I know first hand daily that children learn by modeling, modeling and more modeling. They emulate much more of what I do than of what I say. Research shows that we hear and retain very little of what comes at us through audio methods; however, we retain much more of what we see and touch. That should teach each of us to live our lives in a way that others want to copy. My own daughter was going through some very difficult times adjusting to her new school. Some of the girls were being rather difficult and saying some things about her that she felt were untrue. I told her to live her life in a manner so that when others heard these things they would not believe them about her. It took some gentle nudging, but she heeded my advice. Things did not improve immediately, but one day she came home from school and shared with me that when some of the girls were saying mean things to her a couple of the other girls came to her defense and admonished the negativity by telling them directly that they were mean and that my daughter tried to be nothing but nice to everyone and that what they were doing was just plain cruel. Things slowly improved for her after that. I share this story as it may help others to realize that walking the walk is much more important than talking the talk. Would you want to follow a religion that ostracizes and condemns you? Would you want to follow a religion that accepts and forgives? I call that the Christian religion in its true form.
I am constantly confronted with the beautiful stories I learned as a child from the Bible. The house upon the rock has had such a strong influence in my life. Of course we all know we need a strong foundation to build our homes. That is not what it means to me. I know that I must continue speaking to my children even when I feel that they are not listening to me. I must, more importantly, continue showing love to them even when they lash out at me. This demonstrates unconditional love it its truest form. I continue to be thankful and amazed when one of my children says or does something wonderful and relates it back to such examples.
I love the parable with the mustard seed moving rocks. It is such a tiny seed, almost invisible. Yet it can grow and move rocks once it is in its mature stage. Aren't we all always going through infancy and adolescence in many ways. I know that I am still growing and learning every day. I know when I teach that I must plant the mustard seed and then be patient. Perhaps I won't even be witness to the strength of that seed, but I do know of its existence and of its power.
Be on the journey with me. Do any of you have any other connections to the stories in the Bible that you wish to share?

Although I do not agree with everything you have implied about the historical significance of the Bible, it comes with an even greater gift which you convey when held for spiritual value, that the words contained therein have been brought about to draw people closer to God.
The priesthood for instance is used as a means of authority delegated from God to mankind, but not one particle can be exercised with effort by the proponents thereof through unrighteous domain.
It is by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority as they suppose, that they will immediately exercise unrighteous dominion. hence many are called but few are chosen. No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood only by persuasion, by long suffering, gentleness, and meekness, and by love unfeigned, which will greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy and without guile. reproving at times with sharpness when moved by the Holy Ghost, but showing afterwards an increase of love towards them, so they will know that their faithfulness is stronger than the chords of death.
Father Whelan, a priest probably long time dead now, was a country priest in the town of Okauchee, Wisconsin. He was wonderful and beloved by everyone in that town no matter what religion they happened to practice. The love of God showed through his very countenance and he ministered to one and all.
Like I believe you mean, trimar, actions speak so much louder than words! You are teaching your daughter valuable lessons. You are on the right path.
Thank you for sharing your perspective, I can't say that I completely share the same. I guess it's because I have personally experienced God's power and relationship in a different way. (I'm referring to your title). I pray that God reveals Himself to you in a way you never thought possible as you go on this journey. God bless:)
Yes, someone very close to me in my life was misguided for awhile and used the Bible to try to control. Thus, my title. God works his healing, but I felt that others may be experiencing what I went through and should have a kindred spirit share that the Bible is meant to nurture and love not control and hurt.

I believe the Bible is the unerring word of God that he breathed into the minds of the writers. I have believed this all my life, the Bible usually doesn't mention daughters for obvious cultural reasons. It has yet to be proven wrong, on the contrary, it makes many specific prophecies that came true, it provides a wealth of knowledge about ancient history and is the worlds greatest and most popular book. People who reject it as divinely inspired broadcast not only a lack of faith but a lack of discipline to follow in it's commandments. This is merely an attempt to dodge Christs command of taking up his cross and following Him.
Examples:
Jesus told the people not to marvel at the temple "for soon not one stone shall be set upon another." Only thirty-years later the Romans leveled the city in response to an insurrection.
The Bible talks about the rise and fall of many civilizations such as the Egyptians,Phillistines,Babylonians,Medes, Persians and event the Greeks and the Romans. That many historians doubted the existence of these countries until further evidence was found.
The first five books of the Bible, the Pentateuch were written by Moses and cover the creation until his death, as we learn more about our history the more we find about the accuracy of these books.
