The Big Red Machine from Manchester

It began in the early 90's. In fact when the English premier league was created Manchester United took ownership of it. In the 16 years that the premier league has been in existence Manchester United have won it an astonishing 10 times. As far as top flight football (soccer) is concerned they are now closing in on their 18th title. One point - that is all that separates them from matching Liverpool's all time record.

How have they done this? Having the greatest manager the game has ever seen doesn't hurt. Alex Ferguson has proven time and time again that he has no equal. Sure, there have been other managers that have accomplished great things - Shankley, Mourinho, Wenger - but none of them match his consistency.

Ferguson has the nack for finding the greatest players. From David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs through his new generation of stars including Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. He does it time and time again. There are no flukes, this is a master of man management and talent identification.

In 1999 United won the treble - the Premier League, the F.A. Cup and the Champions League. This year they are on course for a possible four trophies! A champions league title would be their fourth. A feat matched only by the likes of Real Madrid, Ajax and Liverpool. They truly are legends of the game.

On My trip to England in 2002 I got to visit Old Trafford, or "The Theater of Dreams" as it's more affectionately known. What an experience! It truly is one of the most magnificent stadiums I have ever seen. As we took the tour of the grounds I found it hard to concentrate on what the guide was saying - I was engrossed in the atmosphere. From the smell of the grass, to the memorabilia on the walls - it is everything you would expect. A boyhood dream come true!

I remember the first time I saw Old Trafford in person. It was 1978, and United had just won the F.A. cup. In those days this was quite an accomplishment as United was nowhere the level it is now. In fact, at times, they struggled to stay in the first division. My father took me to see the parade of heroes on his shoulders. Oh, how things have changed! The years have passed, and my family moved to Canada, but when I entered that stadium in 2002 it was like I'd never left.
