Originally the need for warming the feet led to the 'invention'  of  socks.  Hosiery aquired some notoriety in the 16th century upon the presentation of a pair of silk stocking  to Queen Elizabeth.  From there a special knitting frame was developed which made a semi-mass-production of hosiery possible. 

In spite of a prohibition against the exporting of knitting frame machines, they were nevertheless smuggled out of England to North America which led to the production of various forms of hosiery for the budding market of US and Canada.

The  first steam-powered hosiery machine came about in the mid 19th century.   Following this, the first appearence of cotton gave way to the downtrend in wool hosiery. The 20th century brought in nylon  and manufacturers started making hosiery from this new,flexible and light material.  In it's way, nylon paved the way for today's popular hosiery material--spandex.

In general body stockings consist of a one-piece garment of full-length nylon hosiery which includes a tank top and covers the body from the neck down.  Aside from being an attractive and even warm undergarment or lingerie a body stocking is also useful to smooth out unattractive areas underneath clothing.

Thigh-highs  are another type of hosiery--these  start at the toe and have an elastic band near crotch to prevent them from slipping down. Occassionally they have clips at the top to tie or connect the thigh-high stocking to a garter support. The absence of a waistline allows the thigh-high hosiery to keep from bunching-up at the waist.  As well the thigh-high length gives nylon coverage  above the knee.

Covering the area of a woman's legs from the toe to the waist, is the type of hosiery called pantyhose.

Keeping the pantyhose up is an elastic waist and the pantyhose  can also be equipped with  a seam running right up the back of the leg. This type of hosiery can be made from nylon, lace, spandex, or even silk. Pantyhose come in a variety of flashy colours and can be  made sheer so they appear almost skin like. 

Anklets as well as knee-highs are dress socks that are made of thin fabric that precludes the shoes from feeling pinched, but they  also prevent  the shoes from chafing on the woman's foot. Anklets just  come to the anklebone whereas knee-highs stop below the knee.

Yet another form of hosiery are tights.  Tights  are  constructed with  material  which  is often denser than that of the other hosiery types. Tights are rarely sheer and come in an extensive variety of colour and size.
