The Boxer Rebellion Band - A Gig Review

The Thekla, Bristol
Saturday 26th September 2009
Firstly, let me introduce the Thekla to you. This is a floating boat in the harbour of Bristol – a great place to see a band, drink, dance and be merry!
Secondly, I want to introduce you, if you don’t already know them, to ‘The Boxer Rebellion’. They are an indie rock four-piece band - Nathan Nicholson (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Todd Howe (lead guitar), Adam Harrison (bass guitar), and Piers Hewitt (drums) from London.
Although, they have been together since 2003 and released two album – ‘Exits’ and ‘Union’ – they have received little recognition for such deserving masterpieces. Their moody disposition and performances seems to blow the minds of onlookers. This was especially the case at the Thekla with their melancoly sounds and tight drum-beats that follow the realms of ‘Joy Division’ and ‘Editors’ (for whom supported them in days past!). The band focused more upon their 2009 ‘Union’ album release, which in my opinion, is superior to that of their 2005 release (if that could have been possible!). I can’t really find a dull track on this album but ‘Forces’, ‘Flashing Red Light Means Go’, ‘Evacate’, and ‘These Walls are Thin’ are predominant tracks. However, the live performance was faultless and professional in their offering. I really can’t understand why this band has slipped through the net – the whole package is deserving of Emo/Goth adoration (in a shoe-gazer, black and white way!). A fixated audience swayed through the set. The climax to this gig ended with an encore from ‘Exits’ – ‘Watermelon’. This was obviously welcomed by the audience with the lead guitarist attempting to throw the musical instrument to the floor in an angered euphoria.
An interactive band who are happy to be ‘hands on’ in mixing with their fans and selling merchandise whilst keeping their professional decorum. For all you who like ‘Death Disco’ and great beats, this band is strongly recommended! Don’t let them pass you by!!!
