The Bra--Simplified

When bras were originally developed, sometime in the 1920s, they were just undergarments that gave strong support for women's breasts, avoiding eternal problems women had if they wore no bra --- problems like sagging breasts and backaches.

Today, women are given a basic twenty varying styles by designers and manufacturers who have striven to fill this important need by women worldwide.

Training Bra: A 'Teen Bra' designed for preteen or teenage girls. Those who are in the early stages of breast development. It is smaller than an average woman's bra, and its cups come sans underwire support. In addition to providing some measure of breast support, the training bra gives practise for young girls who want to become comfortable with wearing a bra.

Full cup bra: This is for gals who are 'bra busters' or women with big breasts, and gives full support, because it comes equipped with underwired cups and covers most of the breasts. It is for all women; most especially for those with heavier or 'pendulous' breasts.

Demi cup bra. A demi cup bra conceals only half the breasts, due to its cups coming up just above the nipples. This bra is really great to wear with clothes that have plunging necklines that expose a large part of the breasts. It is supportive, and at the same time provides maximum exposure and support for the protruding breasts. It sometimes is called a 'push up bra'.

Padded bra. A padded bra comes with padding within the cup linings, increasing volume to small breasts of the petite variety. Padded bras are often worn by teen girls, who might otherwise stuff their training bras with kleenex or cotton to make their breasts look bigger,more protuding and fuller.

Underwired bra. These can come with underwire in their cups. An underwired bra gives good support to the breasts and also retains the shape of the bra. Some women say that underwired bras lift their breasts in a sexy way, but others say these bras uncomfortable or painful and not worth the extra sex appeal.

Strapless bra. Strapless bras are those with no straps or straps that can be taken off. This style is very handy for clothes that bare shoulders, such as tube dresses, halter tops, and other clothing.

Convertible bra. The convertible comes with removeable straps that can be attached or arranged according to a woman's needs. It is sometimes worn with clothes that reveal both the back and shoulders, such as backless dresses that have halter top necklines.

T-shirt bra. T-shirt bras are sexy bras and are those made without a raised seam in order to look invisible when worn under a tight t-shirt.

Minimizer bra. This bra is often the bra of choice, again by 'bra busters' or by large-breasted women who wish to reduce the look of their breasts by a cup size or two.

Maximizer/Push up bra. These type lift the breasts and accent cleavage through their special structure and extra padding. The padding may come in a number of forms, such as water bags or silicone inserts. The purpose is to give a fuller, more natural look to breasts and make it look somewhat 'squeezeable'.

Sports bra. Sports bras are for active women who take part in rigorous physical exercise. They are specially designed in order to be comfortable and supportive by holding and embracing the breasts while the body is in motion, thereby reducing damage or discomfort to the breasts. These bras are usually made of 'stretchy' material to provide a tight or snug fit.

Built-in bra. A built-in bra comes with the clothing, thereby eliminating the addition of a standalone bra. It is attached to the insides of swimsuits and tube tops and sometimes are just horizontal, elastic fabric, but some others have padding and underwired cups too.

Shelf bra. This one covers only the lower part of the breasts, sometimes leaving the nipples and upper part of the breasts somewhat exposed. It is not supportive and is often worn by exotic dancers to give the effect of huge breasts.

Peephole bra. A peephole bra has holes around the nipples. Its revealing coverage of the breasts is actually not great for significant support. This type of bra is another favoured by exotic dancers and European women who want to make a statement.

Maternity bra. In pregnancy a woman's breasts become more sensitive, heavier and often much bigger. Maternity bras must be adjustable and expandable to take these 'developements' into account.

Nursing bra. These bras are helpful in the breastfeeding process. They are constructed with flaps that can be undone, keeping the full-breasts supported during suckling.

Answer: It's actually much healthier NOT to sleep in your bra, because it gives the breast tissue freer circulation, and allows all the glands in there to drain, do their thing. If you are not running around or doing things that cause your breasts to bounce/sag while you sleep, so there's no way they will become saggy. Also, if you wear under-wires, having all that metal next to your breasts 24/7 is unhealthy and *might* have a link to breast cancer...still to be determined.
