A Short Intro on the story
The Camel Trail is a novel based on the true story of Judy's family.
We follow four generations, from Safed in the mountains of Galilee in the 1830s to north London of the 1970s.
First we meet David, who is orphaned in the great Safed earthquake of 1837,and follow him to the merchant society of mid-Victorian Gibraltar and then on to the London of the 1870s.
Then we meet Dina, his daughter who leaves London and returns Gibraltar, only to find herself once again back in London as a young widow without funds.
Then Anna, Dina's daughter, who is a keen cook of sweet and chocolaty tastes...until World War 2 and rationing perforce reduce her repertoire.
Every chapter is prefaced by a recipe which literally gives the book a flavour uniquely of it's own, so much so that The Camel Trail won the award for Best Food Literature Book in the UK for 2007.
In the opening chapter, in 1994 Anna finds a letter from her mother Dina...
In the left hand corner were the words,‘To be opened after my death.’
Somebody had already opened the letter!
Anna turned it over and read the first few lines, ‘My darling children. As soon as I have passed away I beg you to ask the Doctor to sever one of my arteries.’...
After that suspenseful beginning I think that I should not tell you any more of the story of The Camel Trail
Tastes, Flavours and Ingredients...

That's it, just start off by wetting our appetites. Now I have to go and get a copy to see what else his letter said. Really, sounds like a really interesting story that would be hard to put down.

I had not heard of The Camel Trail before but I'm on my way to Amazon to pick up a copy. I like it when authors intermingle true incidents with a bit of fantasy. It gives you insight to the authors view of how they would have liked the events to have occurred.
