The Catahoula Bulldog
The Catahoula Bulldog has been around for close to 100 years. It was origionated by farmers and hunters who wanted the strength of the American Bulldog and the intelligence and savy of the Catahoula leopard dog.See history of both the American Bulldog and the Catahoula leopard dog for a better idea! In the mix they also got some great by products like the Catahoula Bulldog is a wonderful family companion and is awesome with kids of all ages.Plus they are beautiful as well!
The coat of a Catahoula Bulldog is short and streight and needs little grooming attention. The coat can come in an array of beautiful colors the most famous being the merle or leopard colors blue, red,tan ,gray and silver. There are no two Catahoula Bulldogs alike in coat or eye color.Eyes can be brown , blue , aqua , green , gold or a combination of any of these colors in one eye which is called 'Cracked' or eyes two different colors altogether!
There is usually alot of difference in size between the males and females Females are the smaller of the two weighing anywhere from 45 lbs to 65 lbs.Males are the larger weighing between 70 and 110lbs.The Catahoula Bulldog needs very little attention in the grooming department which is usually written off to the fact that the Catahoula leopard dog has some red wolf in their background.Regular check ups shots and wormings are usually about all there is to taking care of a Catahoula Bulldog who believes he is supposed to be taking care of you!
The Catahoula Bulldog has very little in the way of health concerns . Hip dysplasia is sometimes seen in the American Bulldog and the Catahoula so it's best to have your Catahoula Bulldog's hips xrayed or 'Penn hip tested'around the age of 2 years. You can also have their ears (hearing)tested and Certified and their eyes tested and certified however if you do not plan to breed your dog these things are not needed unless you see indications of a problem. These dogs live an average of 13 to 15 years .They are pretty tough dogs!
The Catahoula Bulldog needs a job . It needs something constructive to do.They are high energy dogs and do well with families with children. Lots of exersize and a 'job' wheather it be babysitting or fetching a stick is an important part of a Catahoula Bulldogs life.
The female of the species although much smaller is the more dominant of the two and this is attributed to the Catahoula side also. They are very playful and silly even around their 'people' but wary and guarded around strangers so it is very important to socialize your Catahoula Bulldog with other people, so he will be at ease with strangers.
Once you have had the unconditional love of a Catahoula Bulldog you will never want another breed of dog!

Thanks Whit:) They are awesome dogs. I personally LOVE bulldogs. I have 4 American Bulldogs and 4 Catahoula Bulldogs. They are my Babies:) I can see you have a baby too!!
Nice Hub! I never even heard of a Catahoula Bulldog, there a cute breed. Thanks for the information about them I enjoyed it ^_^
I love American Bulldogs, but I've never seen or really heard of hte Catahoula Bulldog since I saw your hub. They're a cute dog, yes, but I'm not a fan of purchasing hybrid dogs when you can find them at shelters for just a mere adoption fee. Yea, I've got an APBT, but I wouldn't mind an American Bulldog when I move out of my parents. Although, I'll probably adopt another APBT from a rescue in ATL or SC.
I totally agree with you as far as adopting them from a shelter. I always see if a shelter or rescue dog would fit a family before they buy a dog from me. A shelter dog is great however you have no idea of the dogs history most of the time and with a hybrid you at least have some idea of their bloodline and what sort of problems might be looming in the future. I am a good breeder and if one of my dogs has ANY genetic problems they are fixed and not bred but retired.Which means three square meals a day lots of love and playing and just chillin out , NOT being given away or euthenized. The point of breeding this hybrid to me is creating a true breed with a breed standard not known as a hybrid but a regular recognized breed. Also I sell dogs that DO something Not just family pets. My dogs are WORKING dogs and/or HUNTING dogs that have been bred for good temperment with adults AND children. If you have never bred you can't possibly know the hard work, money and research that goes into it. I DO NOT make a profit on my dogs they are my love and my hobby!:)
Great hub!

I will admit this is one of the cuter hybrid, mix breedst that I've seen, but that could be because I'm partial to Bulldogs and Bulldog-type dogs.
