Can you smell the fall air? Inhale deep the crisp clean air and take in the autumn foliage against a deep blue sky. Now add in the sounds of whistles crunching helmets and cheering fans! Yep Football season is upon us. It is time for Sunday or Monday Night football. Set up the beer and call your friends it is going to be a great season! One of the teams followed in my home is the Cleveland Browns. The Underdogs in the past maybe this will be their year to go to the Superbowl.

Back when Football was Football before the time of the NFL. the Cleveland Browns were one of the teams with the most wins. Back when they were a part of the All American Football conference they had won 29 games in a row. This was back in 1946 when the average fan attendance was 57,000 people. 1946 was went the Browns became a team. In 2006 they celebrated 60 years as an organization.

In 2007 the Browns began to turn their organization around. with a season ending in a 10 wins and 6 losses. This by comparison was better the total of four wins they had in 2006. But whatabout 2008?  Stats from 2008 reveal that the Browns fell behind their competitors in everything but field goals.  Averages for the Browns were 30/36 while their opponents were 19/28

The Players

As it stands in the preseason James Davis running back leads the statistics in rushing at 121 yds. Not far behind is Jamal Lewis, RB at 40 yards. This is Davis rookie year as Lewis has been with the Browns since 2007.But as I understand the quarterback position is still up for grabs, or being decided upon int he preseason games. Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn are the two choices Coach Mangini is faced with now. Interestingly enough the media has pinned the term Goofy on Anderson and states Quinn is more like Prince Charming with his chiseled good looks and popularity with the women. With the defeat of the Titans in the preseason it looks like anything is possible in this season.  Can we say Superbowl yet??

The Fans

The Cleveland Browns are known for having the most die hard Fans in the NFC. The Dawg Pound originated in 1985 when the Defensive nicknamed themselves the Dawgs. Concept began when they thought themselves the Dogs and the quaterback the cat! The Dawg pound refers to the fan section in the east end zone. True the seats may be cheap but the the fans in this section are priceless. Adorned with dog masks and and other costumes these fans come to rally their team.  At one point the stadium had to ban the bringinin of dog food and treats.  The Dawg Pound started a custom on throwing milbones at ehr other team

The Dawg pound was tradmenarked and incorpatatied into the new Cleveland Stadium in 1999.  The New Dawg pound was reported as  a turn off by some of the fans.

Eric Magnini
Eric Magnini

This is Erik Magnini's first year as coach of the team. Previously he was the coach of the NY Jets for three years. He was in fact fired from his coaching position after finishing the Jet season at 9-7. A lot of controversy ensued as it often does when coaches leave. Several reports indicate the Jets players report they feel as if theya re now treated like men.

Mangini has been running the team the way he wants. He is given full reign by the Owner Randy Lerner. Mangini has been given a lot of flack over the quarterback issue that has dominated the preseason. Although he under pressure to let Quninn be the starting quarterback because he form the area, Magnini is adminant that preseason games will show who is to be the starting quarterback. It has been said many people underestimate Anderson's abilities.

2009 schedule

With a new coach  and a starting quarterback position up in the air, this season has an anything goes attitiude. We will watch and see if Mangini can pull off some magic to make it a good year for the Browns.

So the Browns did not fair very well in the first game of the season. Brady Quinn ended up being the coaches pick for quarterback.  Form the looks of his first game maybe he made a bad decision? Maybe everyone has a bad day now and then.  lets see what happens when they play Denver!

I'm not sure that Mangenius is the answer the Dawg Pound is looking for, but I hope it works out for you guys. Whether he knows it or not, he certainly is following in the footsteps of his mentor, Bill Bilachek, as he too was a coach for the Browns for two-seasons before he went back to work as a defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells in New England. From there and out, he took over the head coaching duties and the rest of history. Good luck on you season, Ms Chievous (my team's the Giants!)

hmmm, certainly wish them good luck, but the other teams have the same wishes from their fans as well. I miss Sam and Art, those were the days with Brian. Cardiac Kids.
