The Clubface; Golf's Forgotten Fundamental
59Square Clubface Throughout The Swing
We know that in order to hit the ball straight, we need to have a square clubface when we strike the ball. But the reality is, we need to have a square clubface position throughout the entire golf swing. The more square the clubface is throughout the golf swing, the more the other fundamentals can work correctly and easily, and the less adjustments and compensations we will have to make in our swing. If a golfer can learn to execute a swing in which the clubface is square throughout the entire swing, then a great majority of swing faults will go away.
This is because swing flaws are results, not causes! You heard that right. Most people think that swing flaws are what cause our bad shots. I disagree! Swing flaws are what save our bad shots from being really bad shots. A clubface that is in an excessively open or closed position throughout the golf swing is usually the real culprit. The fact is, if we are in such a bad position with the clubface, then we must make these flawed moves just to put some part of the club on the ball. When our clubface gets in a position that is very open or closed, then solid fundamental movements of the golf swing will not work effectively, if at all. We must put compensatory moves such as over-the-top, casting, scooping etc. into the swing just to save the shot. Those movements are made as we attempt to square up a clubface which is too far out of position. It is virtually impossible to have a consistently clean strike of the ball from these poor clubface positions. A poor clubface position effects every one of the other fundamentals of the golf swing in a negative way.
The best way to swing the club is with a square clubface position throughout the entire swing. When the clubface position is correct, it inherently improves the path the club is traveling on, the angle on which the club approaches the ball and, as we have already learned, our ability to get into a great impact position. In turn, if our clubface is square with a correct path, angle of attack and impact, then the club can be accelerated through the hitting area with no hesitation or hiccups. And when this happens, the overall rhythm of the golf swing improves. When no compensations are needed, then our true natural rhythm can come through. As you can see, the single fundamental of a square clubface throughout the swing improves five other vital fundamentals.
Unfortunately, the reverse is also true. When a club is swung from a clubface position which is too open or too closed, it inherently hurts the path the club is swung on. The angle of the club's approach changes dramatically and we are unable to get into a solid impact. When these things are off, then we have no chance for real acceleration through the ball and the overall rhythm of our swing can never fully develop. Here, the single fundamental of a poor clubface position effected five other fundamentals in a negative way.

Nice description about the importance of having a square clubface throughout the swing. I always had trouble with this until I watched some slow motion videos of Tiger's swing (http://www.golf-online-videos.com/golf-swing/)
A couple of things I learned to control and understand better was the takeaway (more horizontal than vertical) and the transition (the weight transfer to start my downswing.)
The other area that is fundamental for a good golf swing is the address position. Getting someone to take photos or video of your setup can help you see your faults.
