A scrapbook page begins with one thing; scrapbook paper. When it comes to scrapbook paper there is a wide variety of choices in regards to weight, texture, colors and patterns. Always choose paper that is photo safe, meaning it is lignin-free and acid-free. This is essential to preserving your photos. The most common sizes of scrapbook paper available are 6"x6", 8"x8", 12"x12" and 8.5"x11"; however you can also buy pre-cut matting for 4"x6" or 5"x7" photos.

Cardstock is a stiff paper that is ideal for use as photo mats, backgrounds and paper accents. It comes in every color and pattern imaginable, from candy apple red to zebra stripes. This type of scrapbook paper also comes in different textures. From natural fibers to linen weave, textured cardstock adds richness to any design. Similarly, there is fabric paper that provides the texture and stability of fabric, but can be utilized in the same manner as paper.

Patterned scrapbook paper adds a decorative touch to the page without the weight of cardstock. A pattern exists for every theme and occasion, and can be used as an interesting background.

Vellum is a semi-translucent paper that is great for layering over solid or patterned paper to create varying shades of color. Many people use vellum for journaling by tracing over fancy fonts. This is a great technique to use if you don't like your own handwriting. You'll find vellum in many colors, patterns and textures and even some that is self-adhesive.

 There are countless types of specialty papers to choose from that include handmade paper with natural botanicals, transparencies and glossy or metallic paper. A shiny sheet of metallic paper adds a lightweight texture and shine to your scrapbook page. Metallic paper can be embossed, stamped or textured as a unique design element.

With so many types of scrapbook paper, organizing and storing them can be a challenge. Paper can be stored vertically for maximum use of space but there is an increased chance of damage, especially to the paper corners. Horizontal storage will better protect your scrapbook paper, but can take up more space.

 The best way to sort your scrapbook paper is to group them by the type first, then by colors and themes. This way you will always know exactly where to find a piece of blue linen cardstock.
