Origins Of The Guayabera

There is much debate as to the origin of the Guayabera shirt. Mexico makes its claim that the shirt was designed ny shirt makers of the Yucatán Peninsula. In mexico the shirt is known as the Mexican Wedding shirt. However, the Cubans claim that the Mexicans copied the garment from visiting tourists from Cuba.

The Guayabera was actually designed by Spanish immigrants in Cuba in the early 18th. century. The word Guayabera comes from the word “Yayabero,” a term used to describe a person who lived near the Yayabo River in Cuba. Many Cubans traveled to Merida, Mexico in the Yucatan wearing the shirt.
