The Dallas Cowboys and the 2001 NFL Draft
63The Dallas Cowboys struggled through a five win and eleven loss season in 2000. The 2001 draft was a chance to help turn the team around. The Cowboys had nine picks for this draft. They only had five picks for the 2000 draft. How did the Cowboys do?
Round one
The Cowboys first round pick was sent to Seattle as part of the Joey Galloway deal.
Round two
Dallas had two picks in this round. Their first pick was Quincy Carter,. He was a quarterback that played for the Georgia Bulldogs. Quincy played in the NFL for four seasons. Three of those seasons were with the Cowboys. He was with the New York Jets in 2004. Quincy started a total of fifteen games during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. He started all sixteen games in 2003. In 2003 he threw for seventeen touchdowns and twenty-one interceptions.
The Cowboys second pick of this round was Tony Dixon. He was a defensive back at Alabama. Tony spent four season in the NFL with the Cowboys. He played in every game during the 2002 to 2004 seasons. He had six sacks and one interception during his career.
Round three
Willie Blade was the third round pick of the Cowboys. Willie was a defensive tackle at Mississippi State. He played in no games in 2001 and 2002. Willie started fourteen games for the Cowboys during the 2003 season. He had one interception and eleven tackles. Willie finished his career in 2004 with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Round four
The Cowboys picked Markus Steele with their fourth round pick. Markus was a linebacker at USC. His three year career included playing in forty-two games with the Cowboys. He had thirty-two tackles in his rookie season of 2001.
Round five
Matt Lehr was the fifth round pick of the Cowboys. Matt was an offensive lineman at Virginia tech. He spent the first four years of his eight year career with the Cowboys. He was their starting center during the 2003 season.
Round six
Daleroy Stewart was the sixth round pick for the Cowboys. Daleroy was a defensive tackle at Southern Mississippi. He spent two season with the Cowboys in a backup role.
Round seven
The Cowboys had three picks in the seventh round. Their first pick was Colston Weatherington. Colston was a defensive end from Central Missouri State. He played in three games with the Cowboys in 2002. Their second pick in this round was John Nix. John was a defensive tackle at Southern Mississippi. He spent two seasons with the Cowboys and played in thirty games. Their final pick of the draft was Char-ron Dorsey. Char-ron was a tackle at Florida State. He played in nine games with the Cowboys over two seasons.
Summary
Despite drafting nine players it would be difficult to consider this draft a major success. Quincy carter led the Cowboys to the playoff in 2003. it was the first time the Cowboys had made the playoffs since 1999. Overall the Cowboys did not get any players of lasting value or major impact. they did get some players that started for a season. this draft was slightly better than their 2000 draft. I would give them a C- for the 2001 draft
