The Data Entry JOB Scam
77Do you see those ads on Craigslist and other Job posting boards - work at home doing data entry? Have you ever asked for more information? I had someone recently ask me my opinion of an email she received about this type work. So here's the details of the "JOB".
Hello,
Thank you for your interest in the position! You've come upon something very exciting- a job with FLEXIBILITY and one that will put money in your pocket. You will not get rich by doing this, but it will supplement your income.
Here is a brief overview of what we have to offer you:
Job description:
--Work from home or any place if you have wireless internet service
--Full online training
--Pay based on per-completion basis
--Work your own hours/days, however we recommend you dedicating at least 5 hours per day to get results.
Requirements:
--You be at least 18 years or older
--You have a high school diploma
--you have a computer with internet access
--Valid email account
--Willingness to learn and follow written instructions
Details:
We are seeking only self motivated people with the desire to work with online advertising (there is noting done in poor taste). No experience is necessary. You can choose to work full or part time and the hours are set by you. You will be processing responses from advertisements; this will be explained to you in the training materials. Everything is sent to you via email.
There is no contract to sign, no personal information needed, no banking information needed and no solicitation. The amount of work you choose to do is entirely up to you. As with any job, you must be able to respond to advertisements in a timely manner.
Compensation:
You will be paid $10.00 to $20.00 for each application you process. For example, if you process 35 in a week, you'll make $350.00 to $700 weekly. The average person makes around $550.00 weekly. Again, the amount of money you earn is dependent upon the amount of time you invest processing the ads.
Training:
The training materials you receive will give you step-by-step instructions on how to get started. When you receive your training materials, you may begin working the same day, once you read through the materials . There are no special requirements for this position.
Payment for work completed:
You will receive your payments through paypal for each application you process. If you do not have a paypal account, please sign up for one, at no cost by visiting paypal. The sign up process is very secure and simple and it takes about a few minutes to complete, we recommend the premier account, (this is still free). Paypal is the easiest and only way to get paid online with you having to be charged a monthly fee to receive any payments. We do not issue paper checks, as this work is internet based.
So, if this is something you feel will work for you, to get started please email me back, and I will send you the training materials. There is a ONE TIME ONLY non-refundable fee of $10.00 to cover the cost and processing of the training materials which can be paid from your paypal account, once you activate it. This payment can be made to a yahoo email account. This money is easily made back by processing ONE ad response. This also shows that you are sincere about the job. This is the ONLY fee you will incur for this job. After receiving the material fee, I will send you the materials to your email address within 24 hours, but usually much sooner.
If you are new to seeking employment on the internet to do work from home positions, there are a lot of legitimate companies that ask for processing fees for training materials. I will refer you to Google click on careers (on-line) or post ads for google, they charge a $5.95 fee to ship, or email their starter kits. This is a multi-billion dollar company. This information has been added to this over view for those individuals, who are new to this virtual industry. You want the convience of a decent position, working from home, we provide the materials and knowledge to do that. We do not promise you thousands of dollars. The amount you make is dependent upon your dedication.
If you have any further questions please feel free to ask.
Thank you again,
xxxxxxxxxx
At first glance this sounds reasonable and professional, doesn't it? But let's look a little deeper. Under job description: Pay based on per completion basis (won't even go into the complete online training part because that will come out in a minute) Under requirements: Must have a valid email address. Willingness to learn and follow instructions.
Details: .... online advertising... you will process responses from advertisements, details to be explained in the training material.Everything will be sent via email.
Compensation: You will be paid $10-$20 per each application processed and then they give an example if you process 35 per week, you will earn $350-$700.
Further it states that you will be charged a fee for processing the information being sent to you. Payment is to be sent to someone's paypal account and the processing fee is non-refundable. The part I like the best is the defense that even Google requires a processing fee with the assumption that you will think, oh, ok, if google does it then this must be legit.
So, you jump out and submit your payment and await your electronically submitted training materials. What do you get... yep, a copy of the ad you responded to, a copy of the response to your response and a list of sites to go post this "JOB" offering and suck someone else out of their money. If you felt ripped off after you spent your money and got scammed, is this really something you could in good faith do to some other unsuspecting soul?
This has been around a LONG time. Honestly, I fell for it about 5 years ago. Three of the biggest clues that it was not a legit offering are pretty simple to reason out. #1 what legit business sends you an email through yahoo, hotmail or any other free service. Don't most legit companies have at least a one page web presence? If they've got even a single web presence, they got email accounts with that web... why use a free email service? #2 Why are you paying someone at their private paypal account? #3 Why is there no company name? There's not even a phone number. WHY? Well, if I just ripped you off, would I want you calling me? Shoot no... I can hide behind some email address just as easily as anyone else.
Please don't get caught up in this scam. Some people don't have any morals or ethics. I hope you do though and I hope you care more about others than the people out there propogating this as legit. It may be within the law, but morally??????? I couldn't do it to someone else.

Thanks for writing this. I got the same e-mail from an ad I've responded to on craigslist. I almost fell for it.
We have the same perception. Why should I pay strangers when I'm not sure about them? Their promises are too good to be true because they are just pure air. Thanks for this very detailed hub. Honestly, I didn't fell for these scams because I didn't have money to pay them. I don't know what I'll do if I have...
Thank you very much about this, it assured me
In fact I didn't fell in these scams because i have a god idea about it , so once i received their mail I copied a distinguish statment from the mail and googled it
so i found this article which made me sure.
Thanks a lot.
Thanks for writing that, I wish I would have checked that out sooner. Oh well, I'm out $10.00
Very informative - thanks... and it was free!
Lets hope less people fall for this scam because of what you've written.
I had a gut feeling this was not legit!!! Unfortunately I'm out $10 - and no I'm not doing it to someone else. Now I learned about "internet" jobs. Ugh!!!
I almost did it today. thank god that i research more. I just wish their was a job through the internet that was real and no cost.
I've been searching hard for a job that can accommodate my school schedule and pay me enough to keep my house. Thanks for posting this - I did get one of these offers through a position I saw posted on Craig's List. Thankfully, even as eager as I am to work, I didn't have the $20 to send, and have enough sense to research the internet first.
I am of the belief that if you have to pay to work for someone then it can't be that good! Great hub.
This reminds me of an ad I saw recently about "processing rebates". Luckily, I trusted my common sense, my better judgement, and my logic!
Great Hub!

I fell for this scam yesterday, and am now very pissed off. i gave them my 15 dollars and waited the 24hours for them to send me my training manual..yah that never happened.
Never fall for data entry!
Michelle, I am very sorry to hear that you fell victim to this SCAM. It's bad enough in principle that people are selling a 'script', it's worse knowing that someone just takes your money and gives you NOTHING. I am so, so sorry to hear. But thank you for your comment. It takes courage to admit you've been scammed.
I am very much interested in doing data entry, but paypal is not available in Ghana, please may I know how will I be paid.
Thank you
Unfortunately most opportunities, including Data Entry, that only allow one to pay through Pay-pal or another online money sender type service (not knocking Pay-Pal) - ARE NOT legitimate opportunities. Neither is any opportunity where you are paying by cashiers check, money order or CASH !
very helping and good post...
Yes complete scam, be careful, there are other forms of this on CL. Be extra careful when you start receiving money orders in the mail for the amount of $900 and over. These money orders are usually sent through FedEx and it does not give you any other instructions. They want you to bring it your bank, take your portion and encash the rest through Western Union. THE MONEY ORDERS ARE FAKE!. Do not do anything with it or you will be hit by this bad checks! THROW THEM AWAY they, the whole thing is a SCAM. I WAS A VICTIM, TRUST ME. The person on the other end of the email, might sound legit in the beginning but he/she will be using email address from a free source e.g. a.clericaljobs@live.com, versus using a legit company email. As hard as jobs come by these days, please be careful about this. Look out for flags, and take careful action. For example this peron send emails at 3AM, it might as well be 3PM where they are. THIS IS MY PART in this, do not fall for this scam.
this is bullshit
Hello Lemon,
Sorry you feel that way... actually it is NOT BS - but is a very REAL issue and people are falling for these type scams daily.~Jennifer
Thank you! Was almost duped as well. Figured it was some sort of scam
The more people learn to research, the more they will come to recognize these scams. Many. many people would like nothing more than to find legit work from home situations. Sadly they are far and few between and most generally very specialized...... Unless there is an actual application process, interview, etc.... chances are it is just a scam to take your money.
Now, $10-20 may not be a lot to some, but to others it means groceries, gasoline, payment on a bill. I am appalled at the number of those who have absolutely no morale ethics... ~Jennifer
Hello Michael, A JOB implies the guarantee of wages earned for actual hours or amount of production, NOT send me your money and I'll show you how to rip off 20 people a day just like I did you.
Though I appreciate your making a comment, it seems you made two. I have allowed only the first comment. I have deleted the second one, simply because it was identical to the one here with the exception of a link to YOUR affiliate survey site. To imply that doing Surveys is a JOB is misleading. It's neither a job nor is there any guarantee of income.
Please do NOT use my hubs for your self promotion of yet another scam.~Jennifer
I just found one called googledataentry.com Looks pretty fishy to me. It says at the bottom that google does not endorse them.
Hi Andrea, googledataentry is a bit different than this one here - but the theme is still the same. You send me money, I send you useless, rehashed, out dated information that you could have found on the Internet for free.
If I recall correctly googledataentry is doing 'adwords'/pay per click and very few companies out-source that type work anymore. But it makes for a great scam.
Thanks for stopping by,
Jennifer
Thank you, I was almost scammed.
I am glad you did not get scammed
good information. i am seeking real online job do you have any web add.
Unfortunately, Mehedi, outside of the US, I do not know of any REAL and legitimate 'work from home' JOBS. However, for those in the US, you can visit this link - it's been a while since I have updated the information though. http://gotojenniferfisher.com/jensblog/2008/10/job
How can create an account? And how can receive a work. Please send information this email: Zubair_312@yahoo.com
I think you are missing the point here, Zubair. These type ads are SCAMS! You do not want an account and surely you would not want to be party to scamming others.

Thank you, thanks for your advice. There should be some kind of legal action against those fraudulent people. They say to pay 20.00 USD for them like nothing, but that means food or gas for days, for some families and take that money away with lies it's a big sin and a big crime IMHO. Once again thanks I was about to be trapped in one of those big SCAMS...
Frank, I truly wish there were a way to catch these scammers and then take legal action against them, but surely you know how quickly they can change email addresses, websites, names, everything.....
If you report them, the list is already so long, agencies are already so over taxed, even when they do get to it, if it's BIG ENOUGH, the scam can go on for maybe two more years or more while being investigated.
You are ABSOLUTELY right, $20 may seem like nothing to the scammer, collect $20 from each person who has commented here, and that's a fairly decent day's of scamming..... and they don't care that your kids might have go hungry for days because you invested in something you thought was right and truthful ..... they don't care that the gas tank may be empty.
In my opinion, it is morally, ethically wrong to promote ANY and ALL forms Data Entry programs, but some people have no conscious. Some may even promote it thinking "Hey, If I was a big enough sucker to fall for this, surely there must be more out there."
I am glad you found this information Frank. Continue to do your homework before you fall prey to one of these scammers.
~Jennifer
Is this site scam or legit?
It's a scam site
I got ripped off - $25.96 was the "training material fee"; do you have any idea how to get a refund from paypal? I hope to run into any solutions as soon as possible. Thank you for your time.
File a dispute with Paypal. In the dispute, state that you were defrauded in a scam home business opportunity. That is about all you can do. The best case scenario is that that person will get their Paypal account frozen.
