Spring tour is over but I will continue on the "Golden Road to Unlimited to Devotion"

"Join the fun, Join the party everday!"

I was fortunate enough to catch five shows, 4-24-09 Nassau, 4-25-09 MSG, 2 at the Izod center in NJ (Rutherford, home of the nastiest, rudest security the infamous yellow shirts, I will NEVER return the the Izod center!) 4-28+29-09 with Branford Marsaslis. and the Pepsi center (which was just amazing. I definitely get the feeling that there will be more shows coming , hopefully in the fall (red rocks anyone? 5 nights?). Apparently the Dead did brisk business on this tour, filling 12,000-14,000 seat arenas , in this "recession". I know I am looking forward to many more excellent "Dead shows"
Sooner rather than later!.

In the meantime, there is Bobby's Ratdog (which is really rockin these days!)

Cya down the rd!

Peace
Mark

jimmy crickets batman - i figured out the set-list motivation for this show (for the repeats). The boys played the songs that only were played 1 time almost in alphabetical order(songs played 1 x b4 show #18) . Details - Casey, Crazy, Easy, Feel like a Stranger were all in alphabet order for the 2 timers. Loser, Lost, Me and My Uncle, and Not Fade Away were in alphabetical order for the 1 timers. (Saint after Lost Sailer - of course) Adding the 2009 PREMIERS of ChinaDoll, DeepElm, and Whisky make the LA show UP FOR GRABS! (sort of i guess) What a fun tour this has been. Cant wait to make the truck up to LA and straight to Shoreline!

A magical night in Denver. Opening w/ "Feel Like A Stranger" then "Casey Jones" was totally SICK!!! We also got a nice long "Easy Wind" with later acoustic gems such as "Deep Elem. Blues","Me and My Uncle" and a surprising "Whiskey In the Jar"!!! Back to electric"Ramble On Rose" then towards the end of the show we got a sweet and touching "China Doll" followed by a powerful "Not Fade Away"(goose bumps included) and encore of "Ripple" Warren did Jerry justice- especially during the acoustic tunes. If you weren't there, you missed out BIG TIME!!! Definitely buy this show!>>>> posted by 1107 of Denver's own Sancho's Broken Arrow/ Dulcinea's 100th Monkey

This review is from www.dead.net
by Grateful Dead Archivist
Dave Lemiux:

Albany Pre-show 4-17-09

" After a nice, long drive from Charlottesville to Albany, it was great to pull up the venue at which so many great Grateful Dead shows took place, and we even stayed at the same hotel I used to stay at 16-19 years ago. Pretty cool. The city hasn't changed much, and we had a great night hanging out on Lark Street. For an east coast burrito joint, Bombers should be proud. It's a hip little neighborhood, and just a short walk from the venue. The load in was during a crisp but sunny morning, and everything is running smoothly. Spirits keep getting higher as the shows keep getting better. Now a Friday night in a classic Grateful Dead venue bodes well for a fun night of music. Preparations are going well for tomorrow's live broadcast from Worcester. People are beginning to fill the streets of Albany as the weather keeps getting warmer.

Although the Knickerbocker, er, Times Union Center is quite a bit bigger than the Charlottesville arena, it feels so small. Maybe it's due to familiarity of having been here so often in the past. Walking around the venue earlier today I forget that I'd seen Robert Hunter here at the Palace Theatre in 1997, just down the street from the Knickerbocker.

Set 1

Another blast of pre-1970, with Casey Jones and Cold Rain and Snow opening the show. Cold Rain has always been one of my favourites and this one was played beautifully and had everyone up and dancing. Jeff's swirling organ filled the room, and everyone played their hearts out on top of that. Terrific stuff. Following that with another old one, New Minglewood Blues, had everyone smiling, plus a tasty Into The Mystic sung by Warren was a nice surprise. And then came the 1980s, with a bluesy, raunchy West LA Fadeaway. Crazy stuff. Following that came another dose of 1970-1971, Brown Eyed Women (with a great intro!) followed by Cumberland Blues, with Phil laying down that wonderful Cumberland bass line. All in all a very, very good and solid first set that everyone loved.

Set 2

Everyone was thrilled with the second set opener, Viola Lee Blues! And it went on and on with some crazy way-out-there jams! Excuse the exclamation points, but it was smoking!! That fell into a beautiful Sugaree with Warren providing some soulful vocals. Out of the ashes of Sugaree came a deep and powerful The Other One, complete with roaring Phil bass intro. Bobby has been playing really great this tour, and tonight is the clearest and loudest I've yet heard him, and his playing is high on the wow-factor. Derek on the recording crew thought this Other One was really a cooker, and he was right. Another excellent Rhythm Devils came next, with Billy and Mickey playing some inspired sounds, as we journeyed through space with them. Out of Space came Comes A Time, and a friend pointed out that it was on 3/27/93 at this very same venue that both Casey Jones and Comes A Time were played, just as they both were tonight. Thanks DG for the historical reminder. That show in 1993 was the only time I saw either of those tunes live. After Comes A Time came a long, very jammed out Unbroken Chain, a song I'll never tire of. Everyone kept pushing that instrumental groove harder under it all fell back into the final verse. Well done! A Throwing Stones emerged from that, one of Bobby's finest compositions. What a freaking show! Throwing Stones was a nice way to end the second set, and as a continuation of that usual sequence, the nice encore of Not Fade Away.

Oh, and on a side note, the lights look amazing at these shows! Dan English, the lighting designer, has done a wonderful job lighting these concerts.

Thanks Albany, for another great of music. It was always my favourite tour stop in 1990-1993, and tonight was the best night yet, and that's saying a lot considering how much fun it's been so far. On to Worcester, for two nights at the Centrum (or whatever it's called now)."

Dead came out same as the tour started with Music Never Stopped, and Loose Lucy was strong with some nice trading off of the lead vocals from Phil to Bob to Warren. the first set of course hi-lited with the Dark Star>Direwolf. Into the Mystic was very nice - but then the end of first set was for me , the start of the decline. (hate to be picky - but I'm going to be honest)..Women r smarter "should/could" have been an Iko-Iko - crowd would have been all over it, but Bobby did not rise up, and to end the set like that was weak I thought. Passenger to open second set was strong, but the Hell in a bucket did not live up to my hopes for energy, and as good as Warren played the Althea, the energy seemed to be slipping away. Eyes of the world was nice, and we used that song to dance our way from down front, up to the top for a pee break before drums. the drums /space was entertaining as we watched from the top - enjoying the heck out of the Columbia river as a backdrop for the lights and sounds - but as the start of Days Between was heard - we left the show. We listened as we took the long walk to the shuttle bus and then back to camp - energy was gone from the band it seemed - even tho they went back into Dark Star, and One more Sat nite, the Box of Rain encore was sort of anti-climactic after what had been played in California so far - seemed to us that the second set after the Passenger could have been so much stronger. maybe the band was tired also - I don't know. a few friends after the show were saying "one of the weakest shows this tour" - which we were NOT expecting for this show, being the end of the tour. A great time, and a SPECTACULAR venue - yes, I'd agree, nicer than Red Rocks. The Columbia River gorge is that sweet - too bad the end of the show wasn't as rockin as we had hoped. We did all agree - that there ain't no place I'd rather be......

Review from Dead.net on the 5-10-09 show

Set 1

Back in the Bay Area, in the final week of the tour, with a bit of a late start to the show. I’ve got to say, as cool as a split Help>Slip>Franklin’s can be, to my ears it’s always best to hear it grouped together as it was in 1975, and tonight’s opening of this classic sequence is always one of my favourite openers. Phil’s tone during the opening of Help on this tour has been magnificent, and Jeff has been stealing the show during Slipknot! every time they’ve played it so far. Following this with two classic Weir-sung tunes that were pretty common here at Shoreline “back in the day,” Good Lovin’ and Cassidy, adds to a good vibe in the setlist so far. They do tend to rise to the occasion, especially when playing at home in front of a sold out crowd. The Bird Songs on this tour have been suitably exploratory, making this a nice tune to appear in the first set, and as I mentioned yesterday, the Workingman’s Dead songs have been good on this tour, so Uncle John’s Band is good to see pop up again.

Set 2

An Unbroken Chain opener, which seems appropriate as this song was played at the very last Grateful Dead shows played here at Shoreline, on 6/4/95. The Other One suite drops into Rhythm Devils, a rather quick two songs before Drums, but the percussive improv included, as DR called it, “crazy fire dancers.” Cool stuff. Space drops into Sugaree, one of the only times I can think of Sugaree out of Space, but on this tour, the only real setlist mantra to follow is to expect the unexpected. The tour’s second Gimme Shelter comes next. Sugar Magnolia always ends a set in the best way, on a huge high, with everyone smiling, so this is a most welcome close to second set. A nice, long break between shows awaits the band, a well-earned break. Warren, of course, will be playing in town with the Allmans, but for the rest of the guys, it’s time for some sleep. But, back to Shoreline on Thursday for the tour’s penultimate show.

Review of the Grge show (last show of the Deads spring tour 2009!

This review is from Dead.net, written by David Leimuix

Set 1

>

The final show of the tour, on a gloriously beautiful day in the Pacific Northwest. It’s with a sense of relief but also dread that the tour ends, everyone exhausted but satisfied with the music, and a fun quotient that is as high as it’s ever been for these guys, and for the 15,000 (or more) people who came out every night. This show was a late addition to the tour, and it was a very welcome addition, especially those dwellers north of the Bay Area. A sold out concert, with two opening acts (including the omnipresent Warren Haynes) bodes well for a good party to end the tour. Opening with The Music Never Stopped is such an appropriate way to start things out, and with a Sirius XM audience listening along, this show will be reaching 23,000 at The Gorge, and countless others across the satellite airwaves. Loose Lucy and Crazy Fingers take us on a short trip through the mid-1970s era Dead, and then comes the surprising mid-first set Dark Star, always great to hear, especially Phil playing in and out of the guitar parts. Nice. Dire Wolf follows, a surprising choice out of Dark Star, but I suppose little is surprising on this tour. Tom Thumb’s Blues (a tour first? Zomby?) comes next, always great to hear Phil sing a Phil song from back in the day. Goin’ back to San Anselmo, I do believe they’ve had enough… Into the Mystic and Women Are Smarter (another tour first?) end things nicely, with a gorgeous sunset setting the stage for the tour’s final set.

Set 2

The second set opens with two great Weir rockers (ok, one was written by Phil), Passenger and Hell in a Bucket, of which have been ripping on this tour. I love Jerry’s slide playing on Passenger, in which he plays with some really raunchy tones (Phil’s intention in writing the song), but Warren has been doing a nice job with it. Donna, and later Brent, always sang such great high harmony background vocals on this, and Warren’s voice suits this just fine. Following two Weir tunes come two Garcia-Hunter tunes, Althea and Eyes of the World. Certainly no complaints here with those two songs back-to-back. Mickey and Bill’s final trip through the cosmos of the tour (they were GOOD this tour; check them out closely if you bought the CDs or the downloads) during Rhythm Devils ventures, of course, into Space, followed by Days Between. The Dark Star reprise from the first set is somewhat expected with this band, and is greeted very happily by the masses. One More Saturday Night, of course, ends things off with Bobby rocking the house (or the desert/Columbia River Gorge) one last time on the tour. An encore of Box of Rain is a fitting way to send people home after what is up there with the 1998 Other Ones tour as the finest tour these guys have done since 1995.

Thanks for stopping by these Tour Pages, and thanks to the web team at Rhino for keeping things fresh and current. It’s been a blast writing for the site and meeting so many of you out on the road or via email (vault@dead.net reaches me easily) during the tour. Check back soon when we’ll have a tour recap, and as always, we encourage your comments and discussions here on the site. Thanks again.
