The Death of Another Golf Course

To be replaced by over-sized ego boxes
I happen to work for a golf course that has been sold and will eventually be homes for a very few people who have the money to buy ridiculously large homes. Everyday, customers comment on how it is such a shame that the course is closing but we all know that the money offered makes this a very common scene for what our general manager calls "Every mans' golf course".
The course is open to the general public, is quite mature, moderately difficult, centrally located and reasonably priced. Besides having held numerous tournaments, weddings and banquets, it has always been profitable. Despite all of these factors, an individual came along and offered enough money to buy it and then resell it to private builders and one not so astute developer who thinks he will build $800,000 homes next to railway tracks and actually sell them in this economy. The other custom homes on the other side of the course will be several million dollars and be classified as what I call "over-sized ego boxes". Why would you need a home in excess of 10,000 square feet? Somewhere to park your extra "bimmers" and hide from the children?
It is still a question of when they will actually get built because the construction of the main sewer line is held up while people try to figure out who will pay for digging out the very expensive and large boring machine that has been in the ground for over a year now. Meanwhile, the season grows shorter and the days are numbered before the auction will take place to sell off the assets of this half a century old landmark and playground.
The customers still come and the parking lot is quite full at times and others it is not mostly because the weather hasn't been very good in the final season. Just way too much rain this season.
I have to wonder where these players will go next year because there aren't too many affordable options nearby. They all suffered the same fate. Various sizes of ego boxes swallowed them up. Enjoy your affordable golf course before it gets sold off.
