Gone at age 50

Only the death of an icon could bring me out of a lengthy leave of absence from the world of blogging and commentary. Like millions of fans around the world, my heart was broken on June 25, 2009 when I learned that Michael Jackson had been taken to a hospital in "cardiac arrest." Instinctively I knew that the man who had been the soundtrack in my life was no longer of this world.

Rumors and theories surround the cause of death for this man ranging from a prescription drug overdose to that of an unorthodox use of Diprovan as a sleep aid. No matter the cause of his death or the controversy that surrounded his life in the last two decades, the one thing that most of the media cannot dispute is that this man who gave millions of his own dollars to charity was undeniably one of the greatest entertainers this country had ever seen. I am so proud to have lived through the MTV decade that belonged to Michael Jackson. How many of us waited by the glow of the television for the hour that a Michael Jackson video would run on MTV?

Like Berry Gordy, it is my humble opinion that the "King of Pop" is a title that doesn't even seem fitting. He was far more than the "King of Pop." Though deemed eccentric, strange, freakish to some and foolishly naive to others, Michael Jackson is an artist who will be missed. It saddens me that he did not get to see his own star rise once more, but the fans know his work was done here on this earth.

Many don't understand the appeal this man has in death with questions that loom about how he lived and more now about how he died. It is the music and humanitarian acts that will render him immortal through the space of time and we truly haven't seen nothing yet.

Rest in Peace to the King of Pop....
