People who play in bands have heard tales of a monster in the woodwind section. Most dismiss these wild screeds as legend: the ravings of lunatics. But those in the saxophone section know that something lurks somewhere beneath the bass clef, where even tubas and pipe organs fear to tread.

It is the Double E-Flat (EEb) Contrabass Saxophone, the largest woodwind instrument on Earth.

There are quite a number of saxophones beyond those considered popular. Most people know of the soprano saxophone and tenor saxophone because of such musicians as Kenny G or Clarence Clemons from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. But there are many, many others.

Towering over them all is the six-foot-tall leviathan horn which is large enough by volume to contain four of the five saxophones pitched above it. Why, there's even music written for this beast, if that can be believed!

So if you see a shadow cast across your favorite band, or you hear a growl that couldn't possibly have come from a normal musical instrument it may not be simply a harmless brass horn. If you recognize it early enough, you just might be able to escape in time. Good luck.

Hi Lincoln, to me it is all about the sound and the feel of the instrument. I could never really appreciate the sound of the monster sax. Yes, it is eye catching and nothing short of mesmerizing to watch somebody play it... but the sound. The sound is no where near the mellow alluring sound of an alto, tenor or even a soprano. Thanks again for the sax hub.
