The Duchess of Devonshire Film Review
68Being a fan of such films as The Duchess of Devonshire as soon as I got the chance to rent this film I couldn't wait to get down to blockbuster.
I was certainly not disappointed, in my opinion this film is a masterpiece of English history, leading us through the life of a beautiful young woman as she became the Duchess of Devonshire.
Based on historical events of the Georgian period, the movie gives us a glimpse of the marriage, passions and love of the 18th century aristocrat Georgiana Spencer.
Georgiana Spencer was born and grew up in Althorp, a beautiful young woman from a high class family she was married to the Duke of Devonshire in 1774 and became the glamorous and charismatic Duchess of Devonshire at just 17 years old.
At first believing she and her new husband are madly in love Georgiana soon realises her sole purpose is to provide him with an heir, though it takes her many years, she gives him two daughters, and suffers many miscarriages before giving birth to the son he so desires, conceived through her rape by the Duke after outrageous arguing over his adultery.
The film leads us through her rise into the public eye, her leading fashion and her influence in politics, though in a world of extravagant parties and sexual intrigue, the young aristocrat led a life of hidden pain and troubles.
When she befriends Lady Bess Foster she feels she has finally met someone she can truly rely on and trust. Lady Bess' troubles with her husband cause Georgiana to let Bess into her life and her home.
The Duke of Devonshire being known for his well publicised affairs breaks the last bonds of his relationship by starting what ends up being a life long affair with Lady Bess. Leaving Himself, Lady Bess and Georgiana living uncomfortably together in the same house.
Falling passionately in love with Charles Grey, a young politician, Georgiana offers the Duke a deal, for him to allow her affair with Charles Grey and she will accept his liaisons with Lady Bess. Denied her wish by the Duke and threatened with the loss of her children she continues the affair.
She announces she is pregnant with Charles Grey's child an by orders from the Duke is sent to the countryside to give birth to the child in secret. She gives birth to a baby girl named Eliza and goes through the pain of having to hand her over the Grey's family immediately.
Once she is back at Devonshire house she remains living there with the Duke, Lady Bess and their children till her death.
