The Elements of Good Home Decor
61Quality versus Mass Production
With today's economic downturn comes the search for cheaper and less expensive home decor, accessories and accents. Fitting such things into your budget is very important. You need to prepare a list of your wants and then incorporate that into the amount of cash you have alloted to spend.
When looking for decorations for your home the elements of good design come into play. So does the quality of the decor you plan to purchase. Be sure to check the structure of the piece before you buy. It's easy to see and buy something you just love. But will it last? If your in a store that has a look but do not touch sign, you should probably be looking for another store. The home decorations you buy are meant to be used, touched and above all, last. You should be able to pick up the piece and inspect it for good workmanship, solid structure and lasting color. (Some products are a color overlay. If the item gets scratched, the paint comes off easily.)
When you plan your design, include the use of only one or two major focal points in each room. You can then build around that theme. It isn't necessary to load the room up with all kinds of decor to match and surround your focal point.. A little goes a long way when you select a quality piece that makes a statement all by itself. It is better to spend more on the focal point than a lot of decor all over the house.
This is where quality over rules mass production. If you choose a wall decor accent, as an example, you want that piece to hold up on the wall and not bend over later. Believe it or not, this can happen. There are many cheaply made metal decor accessories that are so thin they warp or bend after a period of use. It is true that you pay less for them, however , the old adage of " you get what you pay for" is very true when working with quality elements for your design.
Go by your budget. If you see a piece that you think will look great in your home or office make sure you know more about the quality. Sometimes it is worth more in the long run to choose a accent based on the material and its durability than its price. Consider choosing one or two quality elements rather than several less expensive items that will be placed at every nook and cranny. This way you will have a piece that lasts, looks better and will save you money in the long run.
