The Essence of Ecommerce
65
There is this air of uncertainty about starting or running an ecommerce business. Most people I talk to are usually in three different phases when it comes to this business. In the beginning or planning phase they are full of doubt towards the validity of the ecommerce model. Then once they get into the business they become complacent towards improving their business model. And finally while established in the model they are nervous about taking the next step or getting to the next level.
Business Opportunities
The essence of the ecommerce business is uncertainty. I say that mostly because there are so many barriers in place that stop people from becoming very successful. I think the biggest ones are myths and misconception. Anytime you step out of your comfort zone and try something new, or invest money, speculation begins. People either doubt or fall on the experiences of others whether those experiences are bad or good. I have heard from more than one person that said "well I heard that it is very risky" When you asked them who they heard it from, they cannot answer. Sometimes we are own worst enemy.
Starting an Internet Based Business
If you think you want to start a business online, perhaps it is wise to gather your facts first. Getting all of your research done right, the first time, is key. So many people jump in and thus fail because they did not think through things. Now all of those people who failed add fuel to the fire that makes it hard for someone else to overcome. Perhaps this is human nature to allow ourselves to be influenced by this. If you just do a little bit of homework, you can save yourself a lot of heartache. The first thing I would recommend is to look at websites or storefronts that are successful. Then pick a niche or audience that you enjoy doing yourself, so you can keep an interest in it.
Ebay
One of the very best ways to get your feet wet is to start with Ebay. Selling online through Ebay is an excellent education. You will find out if you like dealing with people as a seller. You will find out if you like to write content and be creative. You will find out a lot about the products you are thinking about carrying. You will also find out a lot about keeping basic books and managing the fees with being online. Ebay does a new seller a tremendous favor, that favor is their marketing strategy. You can rely on the fact that Ebay spends a ton of money on marketing their system. There are always a lot of people on Ebay already looking for something to buy. Considering this, it makes it easier to get started since you do not have to worry about traffic.
The Next Step
People that do well on Ebay often go on to open their own sites in order to escape the fees that Ebay charges. This is a good thing since it elevates you to another level of selling. Next you will have to figure out and get good at some new concepts that put you out of your comfort zone. Creating a site, as well as optimizing and marketing it are a true science. Learning all the tricks of the trade can be crucial to your success. One of the best practices you can make is to hire a professional to get you set up the right way. This costs money and sometimes can cause tension because it puts you in a new arena of pressure in your online venture. Don't let this get to you; you are on the front side of a learning curve. Accepting that fact will help you be at ease.

Taking it Higher
If you are at this level of your online business, you probably have a website and its doing "ok" but not great. Getting the business to move upwards takes a pretty good push of effort. You may have to add a product line which means a significant amount of work and programming. You may have to spend some money on your search engine optimization campaign which can also lend to some pressure or uncertainty. You may find that you are asking yourself "is this going to work?" or "is this worth the money?" The answer is yes, but you just do not know it yet. Getting out of the mode of wondering and moving towards "doing" is more than half the battle. I find myself always telling myself that I need to "push this thing" to the next level. If I do not, I will fall into a pattern of being satisfied with mediocrity, and we have plenty of that online.
So how do all of these fit into the uncertainty model? Each one of these steps is subject to doubt or nervousness about ourselves or money. Sometimes it can come from a spouse who is uncomfortable, and sometimes it can come from the barrage of "bad news" that is constantly being reported by local and national news. Half the battle is to help yourself to understand what your basic emotional response is going to be and then recognize it. Yes, investing money in a SEO campaign hurts a little, paying out some cash for an email campaign hurts too, but all those things are effective. To feel unsure is normal; to have a small twang of doubt is normal too. When it comes to business, you have to live on the edge sometimes. Like I said before, the essence of Ecommerce is uncertainty.
