56Twitter is a short message service, limited to only 140 characters per post, where people from around the world type in explanations of what they are doing, what they are thinking, or even what they would like you to take a look at. It started more as a way for people to advise friends and family as to what they were doing. However, the evolution of twitter has caused it to be used more and more by people and businesses for marketing purposes.
Millions of people now have Twitter accounts and the number of users is growing all the time. As a result the possibilities of Twitter as a marketing tool are endless. There are now over 200 mostly free applications that people can utilize with Twitter to enhance their Twitter experience. Business “tweets” (posts) often provide a link that can be a key element for companies to gain new customers. Everyday, Twitter is becoming more mainstream. The more popular this unique service becomes, the more it will become a tool of choice for companies spreading their marketing messages.
Businesses are now using Twitter by putting links to their websites in their posts and in their profile to increase traffic to their sites. They are able to target people with interest in a particular niche and then leave comments for them, or follow them and potentially create interested prospects. Over time they create more followers and that results in more potential customers. Some businesses even put a Twitter link on their sites to encourage people to follow them on Twitter and thereby receive their posts.
With the growing popularity of Twitter it is unlikely to go away any time soon, especially since the service is Free. As I mentioned before, there are numerous applications for Twitter and as time goes on it will undoubtedly continue to evolve as smart people see additional ways to make use of it.
