The Exorcist: Evil in it's most Terrifying Form!!
64
I am a huge fan of horror movies and my all-time favorite is the 'Exorcist' directed by William Friedkin. For those of you who may not have ever had the pleasure of viewing this film, I am going to provide a rundown on the movie for you. I highly suggest that you rent it after you are done reading my hub, of course!
The film quickly became one of the most profitable horror films of all time, grossing a total of $402,500,000 worldwide. In addition, the film earned ten Academy Award nominations and won two of those nominations. One was awarded for 'best sound' and one was awarded for 'best adapted screenplay.' Warner Bros. Released the film in the United States in 1973 and since then Blatty's storyline has been published several times.
There are three different scenarios that complete the plot for this horror flick. As the movie opens, Father Merrin is on an archaeological dig in Al-hadar, Iraq. He is brought to a near-by hole where he finds a small stone that resembles a grimacing, bestial creature. He then proceeds to get into a deep conversation with his supervisors.
Meanwhile, back in the states, a young priest by the name of Father Damien Karras begins to doubt his faith as his mother's terminal sickness continues to get worse.
As you can see there a few different scenarios going on already in this film. Let's get to the central part of the film, this is where the action starts to happen. A young, inspiring actress by the name of Chris MacNeil begins to notice odd and dangerous behavior developing out of her 12-year old daughter Regan. Regan has what appears to be a seizure and then exhibits dramatic, unnatural powers which include levitation and great strength.
She starts cursing and spitting out blasphemes in a male demonic voice at her mother. Regan's mother is horrified at this behavior that her child is exhibiting and at first assumes that is is because of a recent emotional divorce.
The child's doctors on the other hand, believe that there is a lesion in Regan's brain and proceed to administer a series of unpleasant medical tests. The test results show nothing wrong with the child's brain and she is taken to see a psychiatrist. She assaults the psychiatrist, all the meanwhile cursing at him in a demonic tone.
Paranormal occurrences continue to surround the MacNeil household, including a violently shaking bed, strange noises and unexplained movements. The director of Chris MacNeil's film is found brutally murdered after being asked to babysit for Regan.
After the child has been taken to several specialists, and medically, nothing can be found wrong with her, a doctor recommends to her mother that she should be put through an exorcism. He believes strongly that if Regan's symptoms are a psychosomatic result of a belief in demonic possession, then an exorcism would be the best way to end them.
Chris is desperate to help her daughter, so she confides in Father Karras the priest. Karras goes before the church to request permission to proceed forward with an exorcism ceremony and his request is granted.
Father Merrin is summoned to assist Father Karras with the exorcism. In a climatic series of scenes, he and Father Karras try desperately to drive the evil spirit that has possessed Regan from her body. Regan announces to the men that she has been possessed by Satan himself.
At the height of the exorcism ritual, Father Merrin collapses and dies of a heart attack. Father Karras attempts to perform CPR on him, but has no luck in reviving the priest. Regan, taken over by Satan, sits on her bed, chained up to the bedposts, giggling the entire time that he is trying to revive Father Merrin. This angers Father Karras and he strikes the child and challenges the demon to leave the child and enter into his body instead.
The demon takes him up on his offer whereupon the priest throws himself through Regan's bedroom window and falls to his death. Regan is immediately restored to her full health and does not remember anything of her ordeal. The film ends as Regan and her mother leave Georgetown and their trauma behind.
Well, are you getting ready to go to the movie store to rent this yet? What are you waiting for?

I saw this movie when I was young. It was the scariest movie I've ever seen. It really was too scary for me. I ended up feeling a little sick...just a warning for the more sensitive souls.
Good job on this hub.
