In the early 1970's Patricia Campbell Hearst was the center of attention. She become known as "Patti Hearst" or her SLA nickname of Tania. I have asked a lot of young people today who is Patti Hearst? and they look with a blank stare and say "you know I have no Idea". Those of us who were back in the 1970's remember her kidnapping that occurred on 2/4/1974 from her Berkeley, Ca. apartment. Patti Hearst was allegedly kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army better known as the SLA. Upon her kidnapping the SLA demanded that her family pay a food ransom of around 400 million dollars to be dispersed to all California's. The Hearst family was able to get the SLA to agree to a 6 million dollar food ransom instead. However upon the food being delivered to the charity demanded the food was not very good and the SLA refused to release Patti. Then in April of 1974 the nation was shocked by bank film footage of Patti assisting in the Bank Robbery of the Sunset District Branch Bank in the Bay Area being the machine gunner and threatening people during the heist. The SLA was pretty much disband upon their arrest and Patti's arrest in September of 1975. This became one of the most well known court cases and very highly publicized due to Patti being the heiress and Grand Daughter of the Famous "Journalist" and "Yellow Journalism Notable" William Randolph Hearst the self proclaimed financial tycoon. Patti Hearst's legal counsel was F.Lee Bailey and he put up the defense that Patty had been tortured, blindfolded, and sexually abused by her kidnappers and there for she should not be held accountable due to her being brain washed during her captivity. The Jury did not see the case the way her counsel did and she was convicted of Bank Robbery and issued a 35 year sentence of incarceration. When Jimmy Carter was elected President he gave her clemency and by February of 1979 she was freed from her prison cell. Patti, had actually served less then 2 years in prison for her Bank heist crime that she was convicted of by a jury. Then to every one's amazement she was given a full pardon by President Bill Clinton in 2001. Today, Patti Hearst is known as a 54 year old mother of two with her kids Lydia and Gillian and she is married to Bernard Shaw that received his notoriety from Patti and is well known as Patti's former Body Guard.
