Movies that Hurt So Good

Sometimes it feels good to wallow in sadness. To sit in your room, in the dark, and listen to Sinead O sing "Nothing Compares 2 U" endlessly. But to watch a depressing movie is the ultimate indulgence when you feel like the blues are upon you. Here are some suggestions for the next time you want to have a good cry.

SPOILER ALERT! Don't read past the names if you don't want to know the ending...

The Last American Virgin- This one totally threw me for a loop when I first saw it. You're thinking- ah, teen sex comedy! And then they pull the rug right from under your feet. Good guy Gary, after helping crush Karen pay for an abortion by selling his stuff and borrowing money from his boss, attends her birthday party and finds her kissing the heel (who happens to be Gary's friend) who knocked her up and abandoned in the first place! The final scene is Gary driving in his car, crying his eyes out and "Just Once" by James Ingram playing on the soundtrack.

Johns- Why do stories about male prostitutes always end badly? All hustlers John and Donner want to do is open their own theme park (how sweet!) Instead, due to a tactical error on John's part, he ends up dead, another victim of a john gone bad.

Kids- A very controversial film. I watched 90% of the audience walk out of this movie within 30 minutes of its start. Director Larry Clark is the master of freaking people out, and this film is a good example of what he is capable of. In a nutshell, dumb kid Telly thinks he won't get HIV if he has sex only with virgins. Unfortunately, he already has it and has infected Jennie. Jennie tries in vain to stop him from getting to his next victim and ultimately is raped by Caspar, Telly's best friend. Heartbreaking and scary.

Requiem for a Dream- A harrowing tale of addiction where all the characters end up in dire circumstances. Mom Sarah ends up pretty much a vegetable, Harry has his arm amputated, Tyrone sits in jail, and Marion has reached the depths of degradation, publicly performing a brutal sex act to sustain her drug habit. Not a happy ending in sight.

Great left field call on Last American Virgin. Watched this over and over on cable in the 80s as a form of torture and even found the soundtrack on vinyl. Diane Franklin made my heart ache in that sense of cranked-up teenaged longing combined with the mistrust of all things beautiful balancing on a house of cards.
