The Ferret Litter Box Training Guide
73Your ferret is loyal, loves you and wants to make you happy.
However, when a ferret needs to pee or poop, they can't hold
on! Litter training a ferret is actually very easy - all you
have to know is what their natural habits are.
First of all, you need to give your ferret access to open
litter boxes - don't get one with a cover!
There are only two litter types, that I would recommend
putting in your ferret litter trays, and they are clumping
litter and wood chip litter. You should be able to purchase
both of these from your local pet shop. You only have to
put a layer of litter to cover the bottom of the litter box
for a ferret, not fill it up, as you would for a cat.
If you are teaching a young ferret to be litter trained,
they may play in the litter tray, but don't worry too much
about this, as when they realize what is for they will soon
stop playing in it.
You are likely to need more one litter tray! You will
definitely need to put one inside the cage, but you will
need to put other trays in strategic locations throughout
the house - remember when your ferret needs to 'go', they
need to 'go'! These locations need to be corners, as ferrets
naturally seek out corners to do their business in.
You will know what your ferret is planning to do when he
goes to a corner, because they will not walk straight up to
it, but back into the corner. Ferrets do not dig a hole, or
bury their messes, like cats do, so you will need to replace
the litter on at least a daily basis, to keep smells at bay.
Ferrets are very intelligent and easy to train. They will
learn very quickly to seek out the litter box when they need
to 'go'. You will need to pick your ferret up and put him in
the litter tray when you see that backing into a corner
action.
You must not discipline your ferret when they mess in the
wrong place, because they will see it as their general
relieving themselves displeases you, not that it was bad to
relieve itself in that particular spot. Discipline in this
case would lead to your ferret fretting and worrying, every
time it needs pee or poop.
The next thing to do is to learn when your ferret is likely
to go about its business. Your ferret will need to go when
it wakes up, so while you in the training stage, put them in
the litter tray as soon as they wake up and keep them there
until they relive themselves.
As ferrets are small creatures, they only have little
digestive systems so any food or water, eaten or drunk, will
come out relatively quickly , so make sure there is a litter
tray nearby. Also if your ferret gets very excited, this
makes it want to 'go' as well. General playing should not
make it want to relieve itself.
The process of litter training your ferret will not take
longer then a few days, as your ferret is a fast learner and
will learn the concept of litter trays and what to do in
them very fast.
